“When your music begins, you will be in competition mode.” I took a deep breath, it was showtime. I started off as a shy little girl who hid in the corner, barely extending her limbs as I attempted to mock those in front of me. As time elapsed, I persevered through challenging ten hour practices and the taunting of my peers.…

From a young age, like the author, high expectations have been placed upon me, and vigorous measures were taken by my parents to ensure that the best education was available to me. Because I was expected to be a high functioning student, the vision my parents had of me allowed them to shape me into what they had envisioned. But, like the author's situation, the doors for success were opened for me, yet I had to be the one to walk through those doors. There comes a point where age and independence takes over my mind as I was less privy to the words of my parents. During this time, personal accountability is now the driving factor of success.…

This experience has prepared me to be an educator program intern because I'm equipped to work with the unexpected and effectively problem-solve. Also, I worked for only 8 weeks and had to learn fast and adapt to the quick pace of Casa.…

In eighth grade my class visited an assisted living facility for mentally challenged adults. When we arrived, we joined the residents in planting tomatoes and carrots in the garden. I worked with a man named Tom, and while we worked we connected by talking about the Astros and the Rockets. Later in the day, we were eating lunch and he told me how happy he was to have me come and work with him and how he always loves when people come see what he does every day. Seeing mentally challenged adults like Tom living normal lives made me realize that people often have misconceived notions about those who do not fit into the regular roles of society.…

“Service Above Self” is a mantra that is important to my life and shapes everything that I set out to do. It is a way to remind myself to always have others in mind and to be there for others when I am needed. To me, this statement is something that everyone should work towards every day of their lives. Growing up my parents always exemplified “service above self” through how they treated other people and how they lived their lives. My father is a mechanic and throughout his career has stopped to help others with road trouble when he is on and off the job.…

Looking at my past experiences I couldn’t begin to understand how I could write an entire paper on what I’ve done. I soon realized as I dug deeper into the assignment that what I thought were meaningless events, ended up being major components of my life that helped shape me as an individual. One experience that was formative to me as a child was when my grandmother moved in with my family. She taught me the value of education and just how big of an impact it had on my own life as I grew up. She firmly believed that reading and writing specifically correlated to the success of any student.…

The most influential experience in my life was when my father, an immigrant and a disable marine, encouraged me to devote my life to public service. He urged all of his children to devote their lives to public service, just as he did. For example, my father suggested I apply and enroll in a public affairs magnet high school, which required each student contribute their time to the community. As a result, I worked as a city camp counselor, during my summers, and volunteered for the Broward County Board of Elections Office, during municipal election years.…
