Most Influential Experience

Improved Essays
The most influential experience in my life was when my father, an immigrant and a disable marine, encouraged me to devote my life to public service. He urged all of his children to devote their lives to public service, just as he did. For example, my father suggested I apply and enroll in a public affairs magnet high school, which required each student contribute their time to the community. As a result, I worked as a city camp counselor, during my summers, and volunteered for the Broward County Board of Elections Office, during municipal election years.
After high school, I participated in a program that facilitated the transition from high school to college for first generation and minority students. I decided to work for the program in

Although my high school years are mostly defined through academic success, I would have to say my most meaningful achievements came through the North Carolina FFA. This national organization provides me with countless opportunities to showcase my leadership abilities in my school, community, and state. Obtaining the positions of Vice President and President of my high school FFA chapter has had an enormous impact on my life. These positions led to serving on nominating committees, planning community events, attending leadership conventions and conferences, and participating in a state-qualifying parliamentary procedure team. It was these experiences that gave me a passion for public speaking and Agribusiness.…

An incident that impacted me significantly occurred when I was in the fifth grade. I was always a high achiever and an “A” student. I’ve always thought about helping others so they can have the same benefits that I have today, if it’s just to speak out or even not to feel discouraged because you walk in somewhere and people look at you because you're a different skin color. By my junior year I was able to do that by notifying the people in the community about this big issue. The task was to go around the San Fernando community to pass out flyers and inform them about immigrants rights. While doing this, I learned the skills of speaking to a stranger about issues that still concern us today. Going to the first house was terrifying, stepping into those first steps and speaking to a stranger in the morning that doesn’t want to be interrupted was going to be difficult.…

Out of the numerous experiences that have shaped my life, from intense political conversations to helping out the high school freshmen for my Peer Mentorship class, I feel the most influential experience in my life is when I began interning at a law clinic. I currently intern at the University of Detroit Mercy George J. Asher Immigration Law Clinic, where I have the opportunity to shadow an attorney and work on cases for individuals who come from destitute households or were brought to the United States…

I know a few people that are so motivated to attend college that they already know for sure what they are going to major in before they were even freshmen in high school. For me, I was not falling into that category. College was something I did not consider throughout my time in high school.…

I’ve worked my entire adult life helping others. Starting when I was just 19 years old I began working at a group home people with developmental disabilities and chronic mental health issues. The clients in these homes were often placed straight from secure psychiatric units and had unpleasant, and at times, criminal histories. This is the environment where I first found my strengths. I could easily engage with people without regard for their sordid history and help them work through their own thoughts.…
