Personal Narrative: My Work Experience At Casa

Decent Essays
Last summer, I was a live-in volunteer for a nonprofit organization called Casa Juan Diego in Houston, TX. Casa is a Catholic Worker house that proves assistance to immigrants, refugees, and the poor. As a live-in volunteer, I had daily duties, but there was never a routine day. This experience has prepared me to be an educator program intern because I'm equipped to work with the unexpected and effectively problem-solve. Also, I worked for only 8 weeks and had to learn fast and adapt to the quick pace of Casa. One example of this is when we had to sort through piles of donation bags just to find 2 articles of clothing, accidentally donated. It seemed impossible, especially since the bags were being collected for distribution that day! I contacted the donor to gather information for a more efficient "search and rescue." During the search, we received more donations and help was needed in the front, so I directed part-time volunteers to continue the hunt as I helped in front. Within an hour, we were able to find the clothing and successfully navigated attending all visitors.

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…

Bob Marley once said, “Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery. None but ourselves can free our minds.” In today’s society teenagers are expected to succeed and excel throughout their high school journey with the support of their parents, In order to gain a successful future. However, when fate decides to turn its back on you and pose challenging obstacles the opposite occurs, unless you decide to do something in order to turn it around. After moving to the United States at the age of six, and having to learn a completely new language, I realized of how capable I was as an individual.…

I am greatly honored to be one of the selected students who are being considered for the Spring induction of National Honor Society. As a current eleventh grade student, I believe that I have exceeded in demonstrating all four qualities of the National Honor Society. With my previous experience in the National Junior Honor Society, I have bestowed the ideals to my community as of the beginning of my middle school career. This has led me to take pride in the community around me and help create a greater society with the foundation that the National Junior Honor Society has introduced to me. The quality of Service is an ideal that I can directly relate to through personal experience, therefore creating significance in my life.…

The idea of being told that I had to work for the first time made me want to eat glass; but could it possibly have turned out for the better? In England, when you reach 10th grade you participate in a nationally accepted program called 'Work Experience'. The idea that excites me the most about being a returner is getting to know a new housing staff. The late night chats during Fall training; that first set of rounds where you get to go through and see what everyone came up with for their hall decorations; the first weekend duty where everyone congregates into the office for the night. Getting to know my Lower Quad staff this year came all at once - it wasn’t a slow process like I anticipated it to be. By the fourth night of training I was having conversations with my coworkers that it would otherwise take me years to bring up. While these bonds will remain after the year is over, many of us will graduate, or find ourselves in other roles, meaning that we will have the opportunity to make those…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes.
