My Final Formative Experience Analysis

Improved Essays
Looking at my past experiences I couldn’t begin to understand how I could write an entire paper on what I’ve done. I soon realized as I dug deeper into the assignment that what I thought were meaningless events, ended up being major components of my life that helped shape me as an individual. One experience that was formative to me as a child was when my grandmother moved in with my family. She taught me the value of education and just how big of an impact it had on my own life as I grew up. She firmly believed that reading and writing specifically correlated to the success of any student. Looking back on her advice now I more than agree with everything she chose to share with me.
Another experience that was formative was meeting my best friend of fourteen years. She taught me how to not only dream big when it came to a career but how hard you have to work to be successful. I’m proud to say she attends Dennison University and is now on the premed track to become a future anesthesiologist. She inspires me to work harder and want more for myself than I might have originally imagined. My final formative experience was when I was introduced to the field of criminal justice by my mom’s now husband. He has been a detective for Columbus Police Department for over a decade and

Due to the college course I was taking my senior and junior year of high school, volunteering was a large part of our class and I worked multiple events for surrounding communities. The most important thing I learned from my group members was that everyone has endless experiences. Each were either similar or much different from my own and overall very significant in shaping who we become as we grow older. I was pleased to hear that others went through the same thing I had or worried about things I did as well growing up such as, how others perceived us, and what was expected of us,

Ever since I was little, I’ve always wanted to help people. Being a Boy Scout gave me the opportunity to do so. When I was eight years old I joined the cub scouts which began my life long campaign of helping people. I started off learning to take the oath to serve the people weather it be by the organization or myself. I assisted by selling popcorn for charity organizations ( The San Antonio Food Bank and The Knights of Columbus) or for money that we needed for our camp out trips.…

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

An incident that impacted me significantly occurred when I was in the fifth grade. I was always a high achiever and an “A” student. I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

Most people were older and retired and wanted something that they could do throughout the week. I think the most common thing people wanted out of volunteering was to have a community that they could to be a part of. Just from observing the people around me, I could tell that friendships had been made. That people really enjoyed being there and doing something useful. A lot of people seemed to enjoy working with new volunteers and teaching them the ropes.…

Week without walls" Two years ago, no one would have imagined the transformation in my personality; from a timid and introvert teenager to an active young man striving to contribute to my community. My story started in tenth grade, when the school counselor recommended that I participate in the schools extended volunteer program under the "week without walls" initiative. The program, in hour school, was originally designed to provide the students with an opportunity to engage in experiential learning and participate in activity based programs. However, later on it evolved into an opportunity for willing students to focus on volunteer work.…

This week during my field experience, I got the amazing opportunity to go to Fort Yates and visit the shelter down there. I went down there with an advocate who has her license in social work. Everyday, thousands of high school students immerse themselves in their community and create satisfaction in helping others in need. Community service is a critical aspect of teen development. Without it, students do not realize how much it means to help others, and they do not get the full experience of working with different people. Volunteerism is required in many high schools around the United States, but not all of them. This issue is incredibly controversial because the debate is whether community service actually helps students in the long run.…
