College Admissions Essay: Service Above Self

“Service Above Self” is a mantra that is important to my life and shapes everything that I set out to do. It is a way to remind myself to always have others in mind and to be there for others when I am needed. To me, this statement is something that everyone should work towards every day of their lives. Growing up my parents always exemplified “service above self” through how they treated other people and how they lived their lives. My father is a mechanic and throughout his career has stopped to help others with road trouble when he is on and off the job. My mother has spent her life helping children who have mental disabilities and goes out of her way to help those children who may not quite qualify for her services. She helps these individuals who are too high functioning to qualify by taking her lunch break to go and see those children and just talk with them. My junior year of high school, with the same program, I was able to help organize and run a job fair/workshop for people in the community who were interested in learning how to appropriately dress for an interview, how to write a resume, and how to present themselves during an interview process. During the summer between my junior year of high school and throughout my senior year of high school, I was a volunteer for Cannon Beach Fire and Rescue where I attended all of their weekly meetings and got to go and help with multiple fire calls throughout the year.
