I was a anti-social freshman with hardly any friends, when the virus entered my family’s life. My father was diagnosed with valley-fever, a fungus that eats away at the lungs. This is when I knew from that life would only get much harder. There I sat in the waiting room of the ICU with the same symptoms as my dad, contemplating whether my family would have to bury my dad or me. I would sit there everyday to support my dad from the time I would get out of school until the nurses forced us out. It felt like an endless nightmare and it became harder to balance my school work and personal life. Baseball, my passion, was my only outlet. Although I made the team, my playing time was miniscule and I was disappointed in myself because my father did not get to see me play. However, as I worked harder and proved my skills to my coaches, I became starter for the rest of my high school career. I earned the role as team captain and encouraged my other teammates to exceed their capabilities. My teammates looked to me as a rolemodel, so my behavior always reflected my character. I was able to balance a stern but fair leadership, gaining the respect of my teammates. Even though my team was to compete, I made everyone involved and enjoy it. I never discouraged anyone for their lack of skills, but for their poor conduct. If anyone was struggling, I would give them personal lessons to fix any problems. There were certain drills I would teach depending on which problem they were undergoing. This helped our team our get more hits and cause less fielding errors each season. The dedication lead to us reaching the third round in CIF playoffs, a new school record. Our team made our school a well respected for baseball, making more kids want to enroll in the school.I ended my career as one of the top defensive and offensive players in the league, earning me the title of player of the year and a spot on the all-star

As a baseball player of our school, I learned how to accept the reality and watch out for our team. I was not the brightest player because I never played baseball. If I were to complain for my minutes out in the field and be in a bad mood at the dug out, it would have affected the whole team because in baseball everyone has their role. I might not have won any awards for this sport, but I already started training so that when the season comes around I would be in advantage in competition for the starting…

A heavyset man who would go clobbering around in his boots and overalls, basically glaring at anyone who came around him, is what some people remember of my father. All his friends and family remember him as a man with too many jokes to tell. My father was very intimidating to people at first glance with his bulky 6’4’’ frame. His salt and pepper hair contrasted greatly from his dark olive complexion. Behind his think glasses hid a stern face, but soft, tired brown eyes.…

For a long time after my father’s death I could not tolerate things that reminded me of hospitals—the semi-sweet aromas of rubber gloves or cleaning solution, the sounds of a ventilator in a song, tape on human skin. Medical TV shows were definitely out of the question. I thought that if I could push the reminders away, the situation would be easier. And whether or not that was true, I did it out of necessity. With time, the intensity these effects waned, but a clearer, lasting impact became evident.…
