There are three “Jieliang Phone Home!” sections: Part A describes the management view, part B describes the direct labor workers’ view, and part C details the results of employee surveys on two manufacturing shifts at Precision Electro-Tech’s Dongguan, China manufacturing plant. These case studies are the basis of our analysis that describes a situation and an observation. Applications of values, assumptions, beliefs, expectations (VABEs) along with cultural and personality mores are utilized to address the nature and solutions of the case.

Signs, status indicators and other visual cues in and around the production lines were arranged to allow for ease of communication and information flow. The strategic purpose of this type of visual system is to make floor operations transparent to all involved in production. An example is how each station had a post with color-coded lights to reflect the status and sequence of assembly.
This genius of the visual system is that workers can see at a glance what has been done and what needs to be done next. There is no need to shout across the floor when information is exchanged. Managers can see at a glance the general and specific conditions of the plant operations. For example if equipment goes down at a station, it is immediately apparent by a conspicuously placed indicator. The possible negative aspect of such a mechanically synchronized system is that operationally, it is singularly sensory driven (i.e., visual) and reactionary by design; and leaves little room for resourcefulness and creative solutions.
