Most people and history would agree there was a man named Jesus who walked and lived on this earth. But the dispute lies in His claim to be God. This paper will address this from the standpoint that Jesus is God manifested in flesh. In humanity, Christ was totally human; in deity, Jesus was unalterably God. Yet in Jesus Christ was a single, undivided personality in whom these two natures are vitally and undividedly united, so that Jesus Christ is not God and man, but the God-man.

In the Synoptic gospels Jesus’ humanity is taken for granted, as if it could not possibly occur to anyone to question it. Scripture clearly shows Jesus was tired (Mark 4:38), hungry (Luke 4:2), and weary (John 4:6) just as every human being. Yet, comparable to Jesus’ day, people today readily accept His humanity. The controversy arises over His claim to deity, “I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30) Thomas Schultz noted, “Not one recognized religious leader—not Moses, Paul, Buddha, Mohammed, Confucius, etc.—has ever claimed to be God; that is with the exception of Jesus Christ. Christ is the only religious leader who has ever claimed to be deity and the only individual ever who has convinced a great portion of the world that He is God.” However Jesus was not the only one asserting His deity. God said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.” (Matt. 3:17) God spoke and that is the final word on the matter.
