Is Too Much Homework Bad For Kids?

After researching over the topic of homework, I’m here today to prove that homework has no benefits and causes too many problems and therefore should not be given. As said in the article, “Homework: No Proven Benefits,” Alfie Kohn says, “...no study has ever demonstrated any academic benefit to assigning homework.” If homework gives no benefits to the child, what is the point of assigning it to them? Homework just causes stress to students, even if they get behind on their homework. Also said in the article by Alfie Kohn is, “... a lack of respect for children (implicit in a determination to keep them very busy after school).” What’s the point of keeping students busy after school if they are busy the whole day at school? So again, if homework is just being assigned to keep kids busy after school, has no academic …show more content…
In the article, “Is Too Much Homework Bad for Kids’ Health?” by Sandra Levy, the article says, “... too much homework has negative effects on well-being and behavior.” Then teachers start to ask themselves on why students behave the way they do. Most probably it is the homework they are assigning. Homework also causes more work for the teacher. If the teacher didn’t assign homework to the students, the teacher would have to spend less time grading the students’ homework. As said in the article, “5 Reasons Kids Need Homework and 5 Reasons They Don’t,” the article says, “... a lot of teachers don’t often have the time to grade papers properly as they are too busy designing lesson plans.” Not assigning homework benefits the teachers as well because not having to grade papers would clear their schedule and letting them have more time doing other work. Homework causes students to experience stress, physical health problems, a lack of balance, and alienation from society. Homework is supposed to help solve their problems with understanding lessons they are teached, not causing more problems like their

First of all, homework causes stress on students. We may as well just spend all day at school if we are having school at home anyways. Students should go to school, work on “school” work, then come home and not do “school” work at home. This would increase the productivity and attitudes of students. I, for one, would be in a much better mood concerning school if I knew that I didn’t have to look forward to coming home to more school work.…

In the early years of a child’s life, the brain is capable of absorbing information exceeding the ability that of adults. Because of this, many schools determine that they will give these developing young minds homework, hoping that the children will retain the skills they are being taught. Although this philosophy does seem logical, giving homework to children can lead to a myriad of problems. Such problems include lack of physical activity, lack of bonding with their parents, and increased stress levels. According to Parker, researcher and senior lecturer Denise Pope from Stanford University "...found that too much homework can negatively affect kids, especially their lives away from school, where family, friends and activities matter” (1).…

There are various effective arguments I would make to support students having homework by their teachers. The first argument I would make is that homework helps students to better retain the lessons they’ve learned during the school day. Students need a lot of exercises to do to retain what they learn everyday in school. Since class time isn’t enough to provide a lot of exercises on one subject, homework is the best way to exercise what’s been learned in class. If no homework is given to students on a subject that’s been discussed in class, it’s more likely for them to forget the subject the next day.…
