Homework has several benefits and is important to a child’s success. Specifically, homework can be beneficial to a student’s academic achievements. The use of daily homework assignments can help students better obtain information which has previously been taught. A student who is introduced to an idea during class, then given an assignment, allows them to practice and grasp a better understanding of the concept. The aid provided from homework then opens up more time for further learning in the classroom. Appropriate types of homework helps students better grasp information, which eliminates time which would have been spent on review and rehearsal of the skill. With this additional time provided by work done at home, students now have more time …show more content…
Most commonly, teachers assign homework that is busy work which not very beneficial. It is relatively simple work, but generally very time consuming. This type of work can often have negative effects on children. Rather than taking time to do the mindless homework, students often rush the process causing their likelihood to gain any knowledge from the assignment to dwindle. Furthermore, busy work often tempts students to resort to cheating to get the work done. The chance for a student to cheat increases when the student feels they won’t get any benefit from an activity. Often times the homework which they find is mindless is the small assignments, however, once a student cheats on work they are much more likely to resort to the habit for bigger assignments. So, even though the student would have received a benefit from a specific assignment, they are likely to opt out and choose the easy way by cheating because they have previously done it and found it to be much easier. This cheating found on homework can then continue to happen on minor and major tests, in which case, student do not benefit at all. Therefore, small, mindless assignments can often result in cheating which can have a ripple effect on all of the students’ work. In addition, many assignments given by teachers cannot be returned to students in time for them to benefit from the corrections given. Teachers have the difficult job of grading large amounts of work from students, this task can be incredibly time consuming. When a teacher has a long assignments to grade from several students the work is may not be returned to the students for week. Unfortunately, often, by the time the students receive their work back with corrections on it, the class, likely, has already moved on to a new section and possibly a new chapter entirely.
