Most commonly, teachers assign homework that is busy work which not very beneficial. It is relatively simple work, but generally very time consuming. This type of work can often have negative effects on children. Rather than taking time to do the mindless homework, students often rush the process causing their likelihood to gain any knowledge from the assignment to dwindle. Furthermore, busy work often tempts students to resort to cheating to get the work done. The chance for a student to cheat increases when the student feels they won’t get any benefit from an activity. Often times the homework which they find is mindless is the small assignments, however, once a student cheats on work they are much more likely to resort to the habit for bigger assignments. So, even though the student would have received a benefit from a specific assignment, they are likely to opt out and choose the easy way by cheating because they have previously done it and found it to be much easier. This cheating found on homework can then continue to happen on minor and major tests, in which case, student do not benefit at all.
