Hunger In America

Here, today, in the 21st Century, we live in a world with nothing but problems. In the Middle East, uncontaminated water is almost impossible to come by, civil wars, acts of terrorism, and everyday starvation are all normal parts of life. Even here in America, issues with both obesity and child hunger are present, both occurring in the same country. I say that some major changes must be made in this problem ridden world. Three major changes that should be made to the world today are: no homework should be given to students of any age, terrorism should be halted indefinitely, and starvation and obesity should cease.
First of all, homework causes stress on students. We may as well just spend all day at school if we are having school at home anyways. Students should go to school, work on “school” work, then come home and not do “school” work at home. This would increase the productivity and attitudes of students. I, for one, would be in a much better mood concerning school if I knew that I didn’t have to look forward to coming home to more school work. Coming home to school work is a great way to ruin someone's week. Every day, knowing that you will be working on boring math, or writing a wonderful paragraph.

Innocent lives are taken every day by acts of terrorism in other countries and tragedies such as 9/11 and Pearl Harbor have occurred here at home. If terrorist were wiped from the face of the earth, be it with bullets or bombs, life would be better for hundreds of thousands of people. Countries need to fight against the terrorists that infest their lands and kill them off before they do the same to the country's’

These causes can be, but are not limited to discrimination, lack of power, corruption of government officials, war, environmental overload, and scarcity of resources. Unfortunately for most of the world, discrimination still exists and can cause biases when handing out food aid. In America’s case, lack of power and corruption of government officials are not a problem anymore, but environmental overload and scarce resources are still problems today (Hauptmann, Cole). As Americans, building houses on farmland for our expanding population and using more water than necessary.…

In November 2017, I spent a weekend at a charity organization called Heifer Farm that works to end hunger and poverty. This experience lets people understand how fortunate industrialized nations are. Most of us do not even think twice about where we will get our food or if we have available clean water or electricity. During the trip I had to live in a section of the farm dedicated to houses that display poverty conditions based on a country; the Global Village. The houses did not have heat or electricity and later in the day it began to rain.…

The food in this picture represents the desperation feeling that struggles could lead to death. Food is something that we all live for, without food we all wouldn’t have existed. There is a struggle for survival in poor families. Poor people don’t have enough resources to gain access to food, especially underprivileged kids in streets that don’t have access to safe food. When hunger strikes, they have no other options than eating off the ground.…

Not only are there few places to buy healthy food, many children in the population we are describing come from families that can’t even afford to buy a healthy meal. Urban neighborhoods with high rates of unemployment and poverty are suffering from food insecurity (McMillan). The South Bronx alone has the highest rate of food insecurity in the country; that is 37 percent compared with the 16.6 percent for New York City as a whole (McMillan). A 2000-calorie diet consisting of low-energy but nutritious food costs $36.32 a day (Parker-Pope, 2007). Compare this to a 2000-calorie diet consisting of junk food that costs $3.52 a day; Families from low-income neighborhoods that are crammed with fast food restaurants will choose the latter diet because…

A food organization, Feeding America, states that “sixty-six percent of Americans had to choose between food and Medical care” (“Community Health and Nutrition in America,” 2016, para.3). Sixty-six percent of Americans basically had to choose between death or death; that means if an individual chooses Medical care instead of food then he or she would starve to death. If he or she chooses food instead or Medical care, then he or she would not be able to get the medical attention they need and could possibly die. Hunger in America is a devastating problem that needs to be solved as soon as possible. The United States cannot have strong Americans with hungry kids because when children are hungry it is catastrophic for them to fulfill their academic…

The topic in which I have chosen to write about is hunger, and the issue is very important to recognize even when there are several benefactors that contribute to making sure families are not going hungry. Hunger is not really brought up as a major issue anymore because there is programs such as food stamps, and several forms of government assistance that is being given out more often than not in todays society. Hunger is not found very often anymore in poor households, and is becoming less of an issue each and every year. According to the article written in 2009, malnutrition, states that hunger is not an important issue anymore, due to the availability of food to the lower class families.…
