Is Homework Benefiting Today’s Society? As the clock of life ticks away, our society is changing rather rapidly. Many of the things that are changing are things like the people who are in this world, the technology used be people every day, and the environment humans live in. Nowadays many things in this world are becoming much more efficient, saving people time and energy to get something done in the same amount of time or less. This also applies to teaching, teachers have become much more efficient in their teaching methods, and also have much more technology to benefit their teaching. Long term effects occur years after a student is out of school and will influence them and their lifestyles after they are done and out of school. Homework has a greater effect on students as they get older and climb in the ranks from kindergarten to the end of high school or maybe even into the end of college (Luke). The reason for this is because once students are into their teen years and beyond, they may encounter more responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities involve having a job, having to be fit and maintain a healthy lifestyle, and may also involve having a significant other in life. Once a student has all of these responsibilities they are very busy and barely ever get any downtime in life. Now stack two to four hours on top of that student’s life and it is a train wreck waiting to happen. These hours of homework are what can cause a student to get less sleep every night, which creates a lack in mental and physical performance. (“Pros and Cons of Homework”). When your body gets so used to going to sleep very late and having to wake early it starts becoming a regular thing, but a very dangerous and not so good regular thing. This is where the changes start happening, the student is so busy they no longer have time to work out, they no longer have time to make home cooked meals, and they no longer have time for any other things in their lives. Resulting in an unhappy student that may …show more content…
If a student does not understand what was explained in the lesson taught at school, then homework just makes more of a disaster. It does this by creating more confusion to a student, because if the student did not learn the material properly then he or she may be doing the homework wrong which is not a good thing, this will then require more of a teachers guidance to get the student back on track for testing. Also when someone constantly stays up late trying to complete this homework, their performance the next day may be ruined, which creates problems in every aspect of a person’s

In the early years of a child’s life, the brain is capable of absorbing information exceeding the ability that of adults. Because of this, many schools determine that they will give these developing young minds homework, hoping that the children will retain the skills they are being taught. Although this philosophy does seem logical, giving homework to children can lead to a myriad of problems. Such problems include lack of physical activity, lack of bonding with their parents, and increased stress levels. According to Parker, researcher and senior lecturer Denise Pope from Stanford University "...found that too much homework can negatively affect kids, especially their lives away from school, where family, friends and activities matter” (1).…

I judge that we can all agree that homework is fairly boring and is not interesting. Students do not want to learn or work on something that doesn’t interest them. Also, they may not understand the concept of the topic, so they find it difficult and confusing. Some students lack time management and may have their priorities mixed up. Both of these flaws can interfere with the organization to do homework.…

Just because teachers assign homework and expect it to be completed at home, it does not necessarily mean that it will be. Students making it a priority to complete assignments on their own often depends on the home environment in which he/she lives. Studies have shown that the more parents are involved with helping their child complete his/her homework, the more likely the child will be to consider it valuable and be willing to complete it. Homework is supposed to be assigned to create other skills that students need to be successful in school. Since “homework has an immediate effect on the retention and understanding of the material it covers [and] it not only enhances individual learning, [but] it [also] facilitates peer learning” (Addison 332), some might say that it would be very beneficial to students.…

There are various effective arguments I would make to support students having homework by their teachers. The first argument I would make is that homework helps students to better retain the lessons they’ve learned during the school day. Students need a lot of exercises to do to retain what they learn everyday in school. Since class time isn’t enough to provide a lot of exercises on one subject, homework is the best way to exercise what’s been learned in class. If no homework is given to students on a subject that’s been discussed in class, it’s more likely for them to forget the subject the next day.…

It is a fact that homework is not helping students. According to Richard Walker, an educational psychologist at Sydney University, “kids who have more homework actually perform worse on standardized tests and suffer with mental and physical health” (Binns). The overwhelming amounts of homework lead to not being able to focus on the students themselves. How can we be creative and have lives outside of school, like we are told, when school is our only focus? To be honest, we can’t.…
