Argumentative Essay: Should Students Have Homework?

Improved Essays
There are various effective arguments I would make to support students having homework by their teachers. The first argument I would make is that homework helps students to better retain the lessons they’ve learned during the school day. Students need a lot of exercises to do to retain what they learn everyday in school. Since class time isn’t enough to provide a lot of exercises on one subject, homework is the best way to exercise what’s been learned in class. If no homework is given to students on a subject that’s been discussed in class, it’s more likely for them to forget the subject the next day. Showing a kid how to ride a bicycle then giving him two tries and after about two weeks you expect him to know how to ride a bike because of these two tries you gave him, is just like teaching a student how to solve a problem and expecting him to know how to solve it on the test next week without providing enough exercises; at the end in both cases he’s going to fail. In other words, if students stopped having homework assignments their tests scores will drop. Another strong argument I …show more content…
Their argument are respectable, however, they are also weak and unconvincing. One of the arguments they make is that homework assignments are causing students to stress which is linked to obesity, migraine, headaches, and depression. Well, homework shouldn’t cause a student to stress; because students have a lot of time to think about it and do it. Another thing is that testes, exams, and quizzes also make students stress does that mean we should get rid of them all? I mean homework is not meant to make students stress out, it’s meant to help them get a better understanding of the subject by practicing. In addition, homework can’t be the main reason for students stressing out, and even if it was, getting rid of it is just like giving up on the whole education because it’s causing “problems” to

Although schools are used to having homework, they should reconsider. To begin, when kids get homework, they might not have the time to do it. Next of all, kids get lower scores on tests because sometimes kids end up forgetting. Of course, kids do get to learn new things, but some of the times they don’t need to know it, and they have to study it with homework. In summary, there are many reasons why kids don’t need homework to learn, or to help them.…

In place of stressing out students over material that most will never use again, students should be evaluated on their strengths and weakness and then placed in classes based off those readings. Some people might say that only focusing on strengths will also hurt students by making them less well rounded which is true, but the system can still create well-rounded students by helping them with their weakness, but not dwelling on them. Education at the high school level should be tailored towards the individual's strengths, preparing them for a career path of choice. Homework is another prime example of how unproductive school is. Thespiritscience.net says, “There is no actual evidence to support that high levels of homework have…

It should neither be fully abolished or given to students in preposterous amounts. Although some say that homework is something that does no good for students, it actually has many benefits to students such as it has students receive better grades, learn what responsibility is, and figuring out how to balance homework with free time. All of these skills are not something that will help them in school, but in the rest of their lives. With that in mind, homework is not something that should be banned or fully embraced. Homework should be something that is balanced and only used as a tool to help students gain proficiency in a subject, not as busy work.…

Teachers have a tendency to pile on homework thinking that it will benefit them in their class, but that is not always the case. If these students were to be limited to the recommended measure of assignments the more likely they are succeed to in their classes and earn higher grades. Homework can hurt the students when they do not understand what is being taught. Many do a significant amount of take home work every night, but they never are able to understand it to their fullest potential if they cannot ask their teacher a question in class. When students are given the opportunity to ask questions on homework in class the more likely they are to understand their material and succeed.…

First of all, homework causes stress on students. We may as well just spend all day at school if we are having school at home anyways. Students should go to school, work on “school” work, then come home and not do “school” work at home. This would increase the productivity and attitudes of students. I, for one, would be in a much better mood concerning school if I knew that I didn’t have to look forward to coming home to more school work.…
