Limiting Homework

According to U.S News, high school students with five different classes spend on average 17.5 hours on homework per week. Mountains of homework tend to put immense amounts of pressure on the students causing anxiety, depression, and a lack of sleep. Craig Canapari states that a teenager requires 8-9.5 hours of sleep; not to mention that most only get 6-7 hours of sleep due to staying up late finishing their assignments. Throughout history time spent on homework has nearly doubled. The quality of homework is changing due to teachers assigning long term projects students must complete on their own time. I believe teachers should limit the amount of homework given each night to 10-20 minutes per grade due to various health issues caused by homework, …show more content…
According to Adam Maltese who conducted a study asking students how much time they spend on homework and conducted statistical tests. The tests were done to discover if there was a relationship between how they did in their classes and on standardized tests. Maltese was the most concerned about grades and made it a point to look at the exact grade each student had in each class and compare how much homework the student did to their grades. This study showed that there was no relationship between the time spent on take home work and course grades. The study also showed that there was indeed a significant correlation between the amount spent on academic assignments and standardized test scores. Teachers have a tendency to pile on homework thinking that it will benefit them in their class, but that is not always the case. If these students were to be limited to the recommended measure of assignments the more likely they are succeed to in their classes and earn higher grades. Homework can hurt the students when they do not understand what is being taught. Many do a significant amount of take home work every night, but they never are able to understand it to their fullest potential if they cannot ask their teacher a question in class. When students are given the opportunity to ask questions on homework in class the more likely they are to understand their material and succeed. Limiting the amount of academic work all students the opportunity to flourish on standardized test and improve their overall grades in

First of all, homework causes stress on students. We may as well just spend all day at school if we are having school at home anyways. Students should go to school, work on “school” work, then come home and not do “school” work at home. This would increase the productivity and attitudes of students. I, for one, would be in a much better mood concerning school if I knew that I didn’t have to look forward to coming home to more school work.…

To me, homework is many hours of my time wasted on relearning the stuff we did in class. Students come home every day with tons of books in their backpacks. Schools shouldn’t give out homework anymore. Children get less sleep and their social life deteriorates. Homework only makes a small impact on their performance.…

If kids didn’t have to worry about getting certain assignments done for the next day, I do agree with Darter that, kids would have more time to be kids. In her article Darter refers to a study done at Duke University. The study showed that “all it does is negatively impact kids’ attitudes towards school, learning, and their parents(the homework enforcers).” This research shows, not proves, that homework does have an effect on studies ability to do well in…

That’s all that matters, right? There’s no time for homework at all, because you’re at the school until about 5 or 6 at night doing extracurriculars like sports and clubs. Then, you have a decent amount of homework to complete on top of that. If someone is in extracurriculars, they spend about 10 hours at the school each weekday. That’s about 42% of the day spent at school.…

Most people would agree that more homework would be a less than desirable, but if we started schools later students would pay more attention and if students payed more attention in class then maybe less homework would be assigned because they would have already covered it in class. Often times when students complain about homework teachers state that if they had paid more attention during class that we would have less homework and maybe they are right. Teachers can not exactly give us all the material in their allotted time if the students are being distracting and loud; Therefore they have to make up for the time with…

A school day initially starts around seven or eight in the morning and ends around two or three in the afternoon (National Sleep Foundation, 2017). That is an eight-hour period of learning, with a small break for class changes and lunch. Homework is also provided to students to allow them to practice what they have learned. It is understandable that teenagers are going to be tired when the school day has been completed. Teenagers need approximately eight to ten hours of sleep, and with waking up early to go to school, then coming home to do homework, a great amount of these students don’t get the right amount of sleep (National Sleep Foundation).…

The time for homework will vary among students; however, the average of assigned homework will come around four hours per week. It may not sound that like much at first, but four hours can be a lot to some students, especially in college. In high school, college was glorified by mass media- everything seemed so much easier. Some students may not be able to study or do homework but once a week with a full time job along with other responsibilities. If students are expected to do four hours of assignments a week, it can force them to have to do it all in one or two days.…

Homework stresses kids out because after spending one third of their day in a school building, they are greeted home with more work to do. A psychology professor, Harris Cooper, from Duke University conducted a study on how much homework should be given to a student each night. “"The bottom line really is all kids should be doing homework, but the amount and type should vary according to their developmental level and home circumstances. ”(duke.edu).…

Abeles writes, " daily homework of many students is as long as lawyers, teachers, medical residents. " I agree many students get a lot of homework in a day from all the classes combined. To a teacher assigning homework may think that he/she is not giving a lot of homework for the night, but combined with all the other teacher's homework kids get overworked. I can remember a time in high school when I got math homework about 20 questions. Then I went to my English class and had to read a chapter from a book and answer a few questions.…
