Analysis Of Why I Think All Schools Should Abolish Homework

In "Why I think All Schools should Abolish Homework," by Vicki Abeles is a personal view on why homework should be banned. The author talks about how many students are overworked. Abeles writes about her kids, and how they come home late and stay up late like a "system on overdrive." The author argues the solution is to banned homework. As much as I agree with Abeles that a problem exists, I disagree with her solution. My experience indicates that students get a lot of homework, but homework is needed to improve grades. The author's solution is unrealistic. Although many students wish homework is banned, homework is beneficial. I think homework gives students the opportunity to study and review material covered in the classroom. Abeles imply that homework should be banned. A better solution is to decrease the workload for students. In past experience, I would get a ton of work in a week and another week I would get nothing. If school homework was spread out evenly, students would not have to be stressed and overworked. …show more content…
Abeles writes, " daily homework of many students is as long as lawyers, teachers, medical residents." I agree many students get a lot of homework in a day from all the classes combined. To a teacher assigning homework may think that he/she is not giving a lot of homework for the night, but combined with all the other teacher's homework kids get overworked. I can remember a time in high school when I got math homework about 20 questions. Then I went to my English class and had to read a chapter from a book and answer a few questions. Later that day in my biology class I had to read a section of the textbook and answer some questions. when I get home all the homework I got for the day took a long time to get done. There should be a way for teachers to communicate to each other to know how much homework is really assigned per night for

To me, homework is many hours of my time wasted on relearning the stuff we did in class. Students come home every day with tons of books in their backpacks. Schools shouldn’t give out homework anymore. Children get less sleep and their social life deteriorates. Homework only makes a small impact on their performance.…

If kids didn’t have to worry about getting certain assignments done for the next day, I do agree with Darter that, kids would have more time to be kids. In her article Darter refers to a study done at Duke University. The study showed that “all it does is negatively impact kids’ attitudes towards school, learning, and their parents(the homework enforcers).” This research shows, not proves, that homework does have an effect on studies ability to do well in…

In recent years, parents have began to wonder whether or not homework was beneficial to their children or not. After spending their entire day in school, children are usually given extra assignments to complete at home when they could be spending that crucial time with family. There are said to be both positive and negative aspects of this topic. The article I chose to analyze was “Rethinking Homework” by Alfie Kohn. This article talks about the so called pros and cons of homework.…

Every state, every school in every city, and every student has to go through an exhausting 7 hours of school that mental challenge kids to do their work in class. Even after school teachers give students homework that inconvenience kids who need time to do chores or may not have time in the first place. “‘Homework is all pain and no gain,’ says author Alfie Kohn. In his book The Homework Myth, Kohn points out that no study has ever found a correlation between homework and academic achievement in elementary school, and there is little reason to believe that homework is necessary in high school. In fact, it may even diminish interest in learning, says Kohn.”…

A Relentless Burden Various levels of government, including at the state and local level, impose guidelines on the curriculum for our public schools. The purpose of the curriculum is to establish an equal footing among students for their continued studies for college and the workforce. Homework is incorporated in the agenda and committee teachers impose a minimum requirement every night. With differing amounts in certain areas and days, people question whether a significant amount of homework does more harm than good in our modern societies. The U.S News & World Report conducted a survey on over 1,000 students and confirmed that “teachers on average assign about 3.5 hours of homework each week.…

Homework should be banned all over America since I strongly agree that it is pointless and time wasting for not only students of all grades, but for the teachers that have to grade each student’s paper. Homework has been a problem for many students all around the country and it is statistically proven that it has been their biggest source of stress in their lives it can lead to mental and physical distress. Teachers believe they don’t give out too much homework, but when combining all the other classes that the student is taking, it’s adding up the hours that the homework takes to complete. The worst part of it is the teachers expect it by the next day or by the next time they meet. This doesn’t include that nearly six out of ten students participate…

This is entirely true; however, homework is not shown to be directly related to test and quiz scores, and sometimes it can even hurt the scores. According to the article “Stanford Research Shows Pitfalls of Homework,” “Pope and her colleagues found that too much homework can diminish its effectiveness and even be counterproductive.” This shows that the right amounts of homework have to be given for it to have a positive effect on most of the students. As evident, kids should not be given obscene amounts of homework, as it steals family and extracurricular activity time, and it leads to stress and can be unhealthy.…

(teach-nology cite) Getting uplifting comments from the student’s teacher, can put an impact on their confidence and self-esteem. A research done by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) informs of students doing two hours of homework or less which are: a small five percent of nine-year-olds, seven percent of thirteen-year-olds, and thirteen percent of seventeen-year-olds. The NAEP also adds the students who do more than two hours of homework are typically above the average classes.…

Many students are afraid to ask a question because they think it’s a stupid question, and that the other students will make fun of them. Chances are the parents won’t remember the material on the homework because they have been out of school for so long, which adds to the stress they already have from work and whatever else they do during the day. This can also lead to bad grades or wrong teaching by parents if they don’t know the homework. “Maybe students are right to complain about too much homework. A Stanford researcher has found that students in high-achieving communities who spend…

With all of the stress that is already coming from school, homework only emphasizes that. There should be less homework because it takes up students time, causes a lot of stress, and causes many personal and social problems. Homework has been linked to achieving better results and better grades, so why are some schools banning it? Studies have shown the positive and negative effects of homework, and with a moderate amount, the positive effects outweigh the negative ones. Homework should not be banned, as it teaches discipline and time management skills, as well as supplements and accelerates learning. It is also needed in order to meet international education standards. Homework is important for numerous reasons, one of which being that it helps teach time management skills and discipline, especially in young children.…
