A Relentless Burden
Various levels of government, including at the state and local level, impose guidelines on the curriculum for our public schools. The purpose of the curriculum is to establish an equal footing among students for their continued studies for college and the workforce. Homework is incorporated in the agenda and committee teachers impose a minimum requirement every night. With differing amounts in certain areas and days, people question whether a significant amount of homework does more harm than good in our modern societies. We have an ever tightening curriculum that has been attributed to the No Child Left Behind and Common Core policies, which continue to tack on stern requirements. The standards have been introduced in claims by teachers that, “students are not receiving a proper education that will bring the successes after High School graduation.” However, many committee teachers do not realize the time necessary to complete the assignments, as students have obligations to fulfill in order to sustain successful lifestyles, including jobs, sports, and social relationships. The average student has to “work for three to five hours a night” (Stevens), while the average game at our school can drag on for several hours, which drags well into the evening. Students only have a couple of hours to complete their homework before sleep and have to acquire perfect time management skills in order to achieve positive grades. It is possible that the reduction of homework and focusing on relevant points on the subject would allow students to have more time on important matters that will benefit their lives in the future. Jobs and internships allow the student to gain the necessary communication and ethical skills that will carry them to their careers, while learning more about your aspirations.
