Why School Should Start Later Essay

The human brain is not fully equipped to learn until ten in the morning. Everybody knows the dreadful feeling of waking up and getting dressed half asleep. We rush to eat breakfast or we don't have it at all and we run to catch the bus. The first class for most high schools is at eight O’clock sharp and you get some sort of punishment if you are late. You are expected to be at full speed and get good grades despite lack of sleep and lack of proper nutrition. Although most people believe that an early school day is beneficial to students because of the opportunity of the extra time, schools should be required by law to start later in the day because it would be more beneficial to the students mental health. One of the many reasons why schools start too early in the is that students of all ages wake up before the sun even comes up. There are a few stories of some children getting up as early as four O’clock in the morning. Most adults do not even wake up that early; even the adults that do get up that early do not do this for five days in a row. The students are often times drowsy and sluggish, even a normally hyperactive child can act this way. That should be a huge concern for parents and teachers.

Most people would agree that more homework would be a less than desirable, but if we started schools later students would pay more attention and if students payed more attention in class then maybe less homework would be assigned because they would have already covered it in class. Often times when students complain about homework teachers state that if they had paid more attention during class that we would have less homework and maybe they are right. Teachers can not exactly give us all the material in their allotted time if the students are being distracting and loud; Therefore they have to make up for the time with
