Being Stubborn Research Paper

When I was six years old, I refused to wear anything but a plain white shirt and jeans. My poor Mom, who just wanted to dress me up in pink shirts with little bows or ruffles, could not change my stance on my outfits. Not even going out for a treat could convince me to wear a shirt any other color than white. I still have no idea why I was persistent about my strange taste in clothing. But this story reminds me that I was incredibly stubborn before I knew the definition of the word stubborn. I loved to fight against any idea I did not come up with. Most of the time I knew other people had clever ideas and I would benefit from them, however I could not let myself give in. Why should I listen to anyone but myself? By stubbornly following their advice and not adhering to the lazy attitude some people have towards high school and classes, I had more success in my learning career. I was not stubborn out of blind obedience though, I did it because I desired to learn and do well in school. When I was younger, people (my mom especially) used stubborn as an insult, namely when I decided to wear a white t-shirt instead of the cute girly shirt she barely bought for me. According to the Merriam-Webster Thesaurus, stubborn is closely associated with headstrong, perverse, or mulish behavior. Now I understand that being stubborn has motivated me to accomplish more in school and actually listen to people who want the best for me. Listening to or disregarding advice takes willpower either way. People simply need to determine what advice is most beneficial. Many people believe being stubborn is resisting other opinions.
