Suffering is a theme that is present throughout Louie’s life and throughout Unbroken. Suffering is brought upon Louie and the people surrounding him through many different methods. There are plentiful incidents where suffering was brought onto Louie and in turn Louie’s life was led by that suffering. However what truly defines his life is how he is able to cope with suffering and manage the pain that comes with it. No matter the stage of Louie’s life, he was bound to be with suffering, whether it was from running, war, or the aftereffects of war. Suffering created a significant impact on Louie’s life as a force to overcome and conquer, no matter how intense that suffering may be.

Initially Phil had been struck by a part of the plane on his head, leaving him severely wounded without any real first aid for many days. This is what left Phil in a concussed state. Mac had lost his sanity right after they landed in the ocean, the mental desperation had took its toll on Mac’s spirit. Through many different avenues, the crew was met with suffering. Whether it was due to the mental suffering caused by a sense of utter hopelessness, or by the actual physical strain that was caused by limited amounts of food and water. The men were feeling the effects of this suffering and their only hope was believing that there was something better waiting for them once their journey on the ocean was over. This stage in Louie’s life is remarkable, it is seen in their ability to manage and maintain sanity as well as hope amidst the pain that was being brought upon them. Even though this stage in Louie’s life has him being pushed to his physical and mental limits, the suffering isn’t as immense as Louie’s life as a POW or after the war. During those stages are when Louie is beginning to break under the pressure that the suffering was placing on him, just as his humanity was being stripped
