How Coach Scannella Changed My Life

Improved Essays
At some point in time in their development, most people encounter an adult figure, who instills a positive change in their lives. For me, that person was Cindy Scannella--my track and my cross country coach for my first two years of high school. With her unique approach to coaching, Coach Scannella not only gave me the confidence to flourish in the sport and lead my team, but she also gifted me with a love for running. This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. Her presence in my life has truly altered my life for the better. Therefore, I have discovered over the course of my running career that I want to have a similar effect on young people, whether it is just a handful …show more content…
Although I am currently in pursuit of a career as an engineer, I hope to retire early into a less demanding profession, so I can return to a small community such as my hometown and volunteer as a high school track and cross country coach. If I can share the same passion for the sport, which Coach Scannella shared with me, and alter at least one young person’s life in a positive manner, then I will be satisfied with my efforts. While my aspirations lie in the somewhat distant future, I have already taken steps to bring me closer to that point. One technical aspect of reaching this dream is to be able to advance my engineering career in a timely fashion, so I can achieve my personal goals and move on to this new pursuit. Thus, I have remained focused on my schoolwork throughout high school in order to prepare myself for the challenges that await me in college. If my college experience proves to be successful, this fact will

As a current track athlete, but most importantly an academically oriented person, I had originally felt pressured to find extracurricular activities, and I would have never tried out for track if my friend had not suggested it. Initially nervous and resistant to the sport, having never played a sport before and fearing embarrassment due to lack of experience, I eventually overcame my nerves when I attended my first practice. It became apparent that the sport didn't demand natural talent, but rather effort and improvement. After going through many practices I developed friendships with like minded individuals, but most importantly a dedication and commitment towards the sport of track, developing discipline and goals. I would have never discovered such passion, if I didn't overcome my anxiety or listen to the suggestion of trying it out.…

The different fall sports had been presented, and as far as I knew, I had no plans whatsoever of participating in any sports—well, except for soccer which was a winter sport. As everyone dispersed to the different sections in the pavilion where each coach of the fall sports stood, I found myself sitting with others whose decision was like mine—not to play a sport. That changed when I heard one of my current best friends, Corinne, rushing down the bleacher stairs and begging me to go with her to the cross country meeting. I thought to myself, “hah, running long distance? yeah right,”…

Making Dreams Become Realities Just as the alarm clock rings and haults the tranquil dream of Yutan High School senior Allan Cramblitt, he leaps out of bed and gets ready to start his day. It’s 6:30 in the morning, and he quickly grabs a shower along with some breakfast before rushing to school. While this may seem to be a common way to start the day for any average high school student, Cramblitt is most definitely not average. From a young age, Cramblitt has had his mind set on what he wants to achieve in life: be valdictorian, go to an Ivy league school, and become a successful engineer.…

And after failing to make the soccer team my sophomore year, my race coach decided it was time to move up to something bigger and faster, we decided on dirt track racing in the stock truck division because it was different just like me. Moving up meant I had to find sponsors, my favorite sponsor happens to be the small town barbeque shack because he is a part of my community and it is incredible to feel the communities support. I also had to get to work on my truck, it was a lot of hard work and long hours with two men who have impacted my life greatly. Donny Townsend and Terry had both grown up in the racing world so it was a large learning curve to understanding what they were talking about and what their slang meant. Now, they are both important mentors to me and they have strongly influenced who I am…

Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

Greetings I’m sending you this message to ask you for a few minutes of your time. As you may know, I’m now fully retired from both teaching as well as coaching and, after years of contemplating doing it, have decided to write a book. The main reason I decided to do this was based on the fact that over my many years of running and coaching, I’ve had so many experiences in the sport that have influenced me and made a difference in my life, why not share what I’ve learned with others. The book will be entitled: “One More Hill to Climb” with a sub-title of “What running taught me about life, coaching, and surviving at running camp.” It's roughly 30% complete and I’m planning on self-publishing it later this year or in early 2018.…

With every practice of my routine, with every lap I ran to boost my stamina, with every vocal exercise I did to strengthen my diaphragm, I was one step closer to my goal. Although it was hard, I finally experienced the value of hard work when my team was announced as overall first place winners at our first competition. It was also experiences like being my team’s captain for two years that contributed to my valuing of hard work. It is not easy leading an entire team, but the hard work all pays off when we hear that crowd cheer for us after perfectly executing a tedious performance. Along with reaching my goals as a cheerleader, I also began to apply the same attitude to reaching my goals academically.…

Coach Londino, Whether you realize it or not, you changed my life. If it was not for you, I would not be the person I am today. I kept the secret of being raped inside for six long months. As an athlete, I began my journey in sports full of dedication, fire, and hopeful anticipation of what I could do on the football field and on the basketball court. Much of my life has been devoted to extracurricular activities such as sports and the comelec, which taught me hard lessons in ethics and values that have made me who I am today. I not only represented my school varsity, but also sports clubs outside of school, which led me to compete in several local and international tournaments. As well as my passion for sports, I grew into my passion for service; service for others and for my school, partaking in clubs and community service activities, each endeavor playing a role in the development of my abilities and expansion of my potential…

Imagine being in 6th grade, and having someone come to talk to your entire sixth grade student body about middle school sports. During a question and answer session I asked if it was possible to run cross country and play basketball, and in a loud voice that went across the gym, a kid said “Why ask you’re too fat to play sports” and the whole gym burst into laughter. This is how my introduction to middle school officially began. As one could imagine the pain and humiliation that went along with my torture, but because I suffer from generalized anxiety disorder my problems were exemplified. I spent the next few weeks listening to everyone talk about me, repeat the story and laugh.…

Coaches have the power to change lives. I can humbly say this as all my coaches, both good and bad, have taught me in some way what it takes to be a good athlete and most importantly how to be a good human being. They have taught me life lessons that I can only hope to preserve by instilling them into my athletes in my time as a coach. The articles I have chosen to highlight in this essay show how coaches have helped to develop character in athletes, how they pushed them to be the best on and off the field of play, and illustrate how they stepped into the lives of athletes and became so much more than just a coach.…

My Future Plans Can you imagine a world without engineering? What would it be like to wake up one morning where technology no longer exists? This question got me thinking about where everything started; which brought me to the conclusion that all started with an idea that someone physically developed. As those early morning summer practices came and went, I found an unexpected joy in running. No longer did I feel out of place, for I found my sport, my friends, and my home. Not only have I been able to score points during the varsity races for my team, but I have also been able to guide younger members who had the same personal curiosity in running as I once had through my leadership as a captain. I feel it is my purpose to extend to them the same feelings of openness, friendship, and encouragement, as they were expressed to me in my first year.…

My love of science, technology, and innovation made going into engineering a natural choice. Concentrating on the sub-discipline of mechanical engineering was decided based on its broadness, versatility, and the variety of areas I could potentially be a part of. Last year, at the age of thirty-five, I enrolled into college for the first time; seventeen years had passed by since I walked the stage at my high school graduation. The dramatic lifestyle change I made was based on me looking to obtain a long-term goal of mine, and have a career that I am passionate about. Hitting the pause button on my career, to go to school, was a difficult move, but an investment I felt that I had to make.…
