Personal Narrative: Running Track

I Corinthians 9:24 states, “Do you not know that those who run a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you obtain it”. This Bible verse has had significant meaning to me particularly while running track in high school. Track is a sport that requires hard work, determination, speed, focus, and self-discipline.
While being a member of a small high school track team, I found it necessary to put in additional training and hard work. As a senior, I felt it was my responsibility to step up and take on the role of leadership, while remembering that it takes a team effort to achieve our goals. The new roll of leadership was to have an impact not only on the team, but for my future endeavors.

My Cross Country/Track coach is one of the best men I know. He not only betters his runners by teaching us, but he also runs with us. Pushing us to greatness with words of encouragement, he implores us to leave all energy on the course/track and teaches us to be exceptional people outside of running. He expresses to us that no matter what we do, he will always be proud of each member of the team; therefore, our actions can’t change his love for us. That’s why it was devastating when he told us before the past track season, that he would not be able to coach for the remainder of the running season from February until we initiated winter conditioning November.…

I once thought I couldn’t believe in myself! I felt as if I were nothing but a sheet of glass that was completely useless. When there were gloomy days, I felt like broken glass that was scattered all over the ground and I wouldn’t be fixable. So I thought if I joined a sport, I would then, have no choice but to believe that I can do more and accomplish more, and be better than whom I was! When I was little I loved to run…

During track season, my seventh grade basketball coach thought that it would be a great idea if I joined the track team and competed in the 400 meter event. I attended every practice and I was motivated and convinced that I could win first place. However, on the first track meet that I attended, I was in last place. I was so far behind that the girl in first place passed me up.…

Before Brayden arrived to pick me up, I worked both of the horses for a hour each. Afterwards, I bushed them and turned them out to the field for the day. They deserved a day off relaxing and grazing under the sun. Before turning them loose to their own devices, I spray them down with fly spray on and slip their fly masks on. Both horses trot around the field before settling down to graze.…

Many times in our lives we have the choice to be a leader or a follower. One of the many times that I have chosen a leadership role is when I was on my competitive cheerleading team. During one of our first competitions half of the team forgot our routine and the stunts all fell. While everyone stood there in silence I started saying the words and going through the stunts and routine and everyone followed my lead and we pushed through the embarrassment. I decided to take this leadership role because I knew that everyone was too afraid to be the only one to say the words in fear that no one else would say them too, so I knew that if I put my dignity aside for a moment our team still had a chance to shine and get a good score on our round.…

On a team that has been nationally ranked in the Top 25 all season, the competition has never been better. I’ve always wanted to contribute to the team as much as possible and until this fall, that meant getting faster so I could earn one of the top spots. When I recognized that I wouldn’t be winning one of those spots, I wondered, “What can I do now?” It didn't take me very long to figure out that there are many more ways for me to lead and contribute than simply being fast. I've found that I can express many different kinds of leadership, depending on what the situation requires.…

My involvement in Basketball and Track has really taught me that if I work hard and strive to do my best, the only outcome is becoming better. I have learned that hard work does and can pay off. During summer of my eighth grade year I was on a summer basketball league, I figured this was the only playing time I would get because the following year I would start as a freshmen. I work hard everyday trying to improve my skills and learning new thing that could help benefit my playing. The following year my coach started noticing how hard I have been working at practice and gave me a few compliments regarding, “nice work today” and“looks like you have been working hard and improving.”…

I was never a runner in elementary school, but that changed when I became a freshman in high school. I was never involved in sports, and I never pictured myself on a team, but I joined cheerleading, and track. I wasn’t joining track at first. I was initially going to join softball. I attended a few softball practices, but I found out quickly that softball wasn’t for me.…

On a daily basis, I am asked why I run. When people think of running, they think of absolute pain and distress. However, when I think of running, I think of freedom and strength. Running gives a sense of relief from the stresses of daily life; whenever I have a difficult day, jogging along trails and dirt roads instantly rids of the strain of the day. You feel free because your legs can venture wherever you may desire.…

“They can’t stop what they can’t catch” This very Nike quote explains where my love for running began. This story is about me winning my first Track race. I also had to think about hydration and how much I wanted to eat.…

Running is a huge passion of mine and it has helped me in many ways to become the person that I am today. I joined my school's cross country team in eighth grade and since then running has made me a much happier person. When I was an elementary school student I was not very athletic, I had a lot of trouble in school, and I didn't have many friends. During recess, when most of the other kids were on the playing structure with their friends, on the basketball court, or playing a game I was usually sitting on one of the benches reading a book. I wasn't bothered at all, but I knew I could have been happier.…

“Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…
