I decided to take action: every day at practice I would try to encourage all of my teammates, despite the different disciplines, even if it was just a simple “good job, man!”, or “keep it up!”. For the warm up each day, I would run with some of the slower people accordingly heartening them, making sure they didn’t feel inadequate compared to track runners who were faster. Little by little, other members of my team replicated my action. Consequently, by the middle of the season, everyone inspirited one another and supported each other. The focus of our pre-meet speeches, which reinforced this newfound reassurance, was family. As the current coaching staff knew, we were struggling without the guidance of our previous coach: every meet was like going into enemy territory, with little hometown crowd support. When our new Coach reminded us that we were unified and could stand with one another knowing that we’d triumph, we were rejuvenated.
