My Journey To A Cross-Country Team

Improved Essays
When I first joined the cross country team, I did not know much about myself as a runner, let alone the sport itself. I never felt like I completely belonged in anything I did, so I was terrified that I would feel, yet again, like an outcast. During my first practice, all that worry disappeared as I was welcomed with open arms by strangers, who all we had in common was the possible interest in running. My struggle was their struggle and as team, we were in it together. A unique bond of friendship formed during those long runs; it was a unity formed by the sharing of hardships and the words of encouragement. As those early morning summer practices came and went, I found an unexpected joy in running. No longer did I feel out of place, for I found my sport, my friends, and my home. Not only have I been able to score points during the varsity races for my team, but I have also been able to guide younger members who had the same personal curiosity in running as I once had through my leadership as a captain. I feel it is my purpose to extend to them the same feelings of openness, friendship, and encouragement, as they were expressed to me in my first year. …show more content…

Three years ago, as a freshman, I decided to join cross country. This decision has shaped my high school career through the friends I chose to the activities I participated in. Cross country is not an easy sport, though. It requires physical endurance, but more importantly, the mental strength to push past and overcome the obstacle of pain. By sticking with this sport, mental toughness has permeated who I am and helped me go beyond the standards and work my way through trivial challenges and huge endeavors alike.…

At some point in time in their development, most people encounter an adult figure, who instills a positive change in their lives. For me, that person was Cindy Scannella--my track and my cross country coach for my first two years of high school. With her unique approach to coaching, Coach Scannella not only gave me the confidence to flourish in the sport and lead my team, but she also gifted me with a love for running. This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. Her presence in my life has truly altered my life for the better.…

During track season, my seventh grade basketball coach thought that it would be a great idea if I joined the track team and competed in the 400 meter event. I attended every practice and I was motivated and convinced that I could win first place. However, on the first track meet that I attended, I was in last place. I was so far behind that the girl in first place passed me up.…

Without his influence I don’t believe my high school running career, let alone my high school experience, will not be as gratifying or memorable. The most important impact he has made on my attitude is his positivity. Because of his encouragement every practice worth going to, and I know I’m always going to get something out of it. For example, when it is a day where the weather isn’t on our side, he says, “What a great day to run!” Just by hearing this famous phrase, it sticks with me, which makes practice a little less harder to endure.…

While I’ve always considered running to be my strong suit, learning how to expand my athletic horizons would ultimately be a sign of my growing maturity as I begin the next chapter of my life and 4 years of continued involvement on campus. Throughout high school, being a member of multiple team sports impacted me greatly in a multitude of ways. I clearly remember the first day of high school, after training with my Cross Country team the majority of the summer, I felt that I already knew people with similar interests as me all around my school. In many ways, rowing achieves the same idea. Along with my roommates, and peers attending Madison from my High School, I would have members of the rowing team to fall back on, study with, explore campus life with, and build lasting friendships after my 4 years on campus are complete.…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

I agree with you. Previously living in Phoenix, this was something I saw happen with the local high school cross country team each year when they would start training for the next school year during the hot Phoenix summer. You could always pick out those kids that were either freshman and new to running several miles or were out of shape. After a few weeks of training no one was getting sick any…

As a team captain of my high school’s cross country and track teams, I make an extra effort to reach out to my underclassmen to make them feel welcome and supported. I know in my first year of running in high school, it was hard to feel welcome in a sport when everyone was literally running away from you. Luckily, I grew faster and made many amazing friends, but I believe everyone should be included in the team dynamic, even if they are not a top runner or an extrovert. New people on their first day are usually timid and wide-eyed. I have found that it only takes asking their name and saying something somewhat funny for people to loosen up.…

I ended the season 35 pounds lighter, 14 minutes faster, and for the first time so proud of my accomplishments that the sting of the auditorium experience almost faded. Mr. Pinkerton said by mid-October he saw my face for the first time because I always looked down. I was motivated to succeed because the words of a bully stung so deeply in my sole.…

“Move out of your comfort zone. You can only grow and be successful if you are willing to feel awkward and uncomfortable when you try something new.” (Brian Tracy) Cross country is a sport where you can either work as a team or work as an individual. Cross country, sometimes makes you as a runner work with someone you’ve never expected to worked with before because we all have our good days and bad days as runners. Cross country is not an easy sport, and neither are the practices; practicing in cross country can range from individual work to teamwork.…
