College Admissions Essay: A Career In Mechanical Engineering

My love of science, technology, and innovation made going into engineering a natural choice. Concentrating on the sub-discipline of mechanical engineering was decided based on its broadness, versatility, and the variety of areas I could potentially be a part of. Last year, at the age of thirty-five, I enrolled into college for the first time; seventeen years had passed by since I walked the stage at my high school graduation. The dramatic lifestyle change I made was based on me looking to obtain a long-term goal of mine, and have a career that I am passionate about. Hitting the pause button on my career, to go to school, was a difficult move, but an investment I felt that I had to make. I am confident that the skill set I have built, the desire, …show more content…
After high school I decided to forgo college, and to turn my part-time high school job, into my full-time job, and perhaps make a career out of it. The job was at my father’s braided rug factory in Pawtucket, Rhode Island –a city best known for being the birthplace of America’s Industrial Revolution, and the inspiration for the city of “Quahog,” on the hit cartoon series, ‘Family Guy.” My father was the Vice-President of Manufacturing for the company, having worked his way up over the past twenty-years. He started of in the maintenance room as a mechanic, then to a floor manager, and eventually becoming part owner, and a strong business minded man. He was the epitome of the American dream. He moved to this country at fourteen with his four younger siblings, and his parents, looking for a new start. They left their small island of Faial, an island that is part of the isolated cluster of Portuguese islands in the middle of the Atlantic after a devastating earthquake, and volcanic eruptions destroyed what little …show more content…
In addition to the classic engineering curriculum that will lay a strong foundation for me, I want to continue to sharpen my creative eye, and keep building my team skills by joining the A&M Vision Inspired Photography club. Some years ago, I became an “accidental photographer”. Always keeping a pocket camera with me growing up, I shot scenes that made me happy; maybe it was a shadow that looked like an animal, or a pattern of bricks that made out a word, pretty abstract stuff, but I saw something there. I never thought much of it, until friends and family members started to compliment my, “creative eye” and say, “wow, I would have never have known that would make for a cool photo.” It all came as a surprise to me. Seeing potential, or beauty where others may see empty space, might one day help me as an engineer see an opportunity to solve the problem at hand. USC promotes, and allows student engineers to keep going with their creative abilities through many student run organizations, that I will be taking part of if the permission to attend is

At some point in time in their development, most people encounter an adult figure, who instills a positive change in their lives. For me, that person was Cindy Scannella--my track and my cross country coach for my first two years of high school. With her unique approach to coaching, Coach Scannella not only gave me the confidence to flourish in the sport and lead my team, but she also gifted me with a love for running. This passion of mine as well as her continual support has carried me through the difficulties of my grandfather’s death, my parents’ divorce, and other strenuous circumstances including the end of her time as my coach. Her presence in my life has truly altered my life for the better.…

Coming to Houston from a country where opportunities are very limited and economy is a challenge for the youthful, has made the last two years a little rough and hopeful at the same time for me and my family. Therefore, school is the most important in my life, after my family; I dedicate my time and my efforts to not become just the first professional in my family, but also to be an exemplary person in society thanks to the values that my parents have instilled in me. Before coming to Houston, I studied three years of Industrial Design in Colombia; although I loved my career, I think that I was too young (15 years old) to appreciate what school was providing me and to be sure what I wanted to do in life. Once I got here I understood that what…

I’ll never forget the moments of watching all my friends being able to go to the playground and enjoy themselves as I would have to walk to a different classroom to my ESOL class. ESOL was an English practicing class, it allowed for students that knew very few English and was a method for us to learn and practice our English. Towards the end of the class as we all headed back from recess, or in my case from ESOL I would have a short time to speak and talk to my friends, and they would always ask about my whereabouts. I would try to explain to them exactly where I was and what I would be doing, and I knew that they did not fully comprehend me, yet I still tried. I would attend my ESOL class all throughout the third grade, by the beginning of…

I hear a buzz… It is just distant at first, but slowly it seems to be coming closer and closer. I open an eye simply to realize it is my clock alarm. My brain realizes that being 5 a.m. I must get up, but my body defies me; it does not want to move. Then, a vision crosses my mind; I see myself walking down an airplane runway; there is a plane parked in the distance, and the wind is gushing at me.…

My decision to return to college was purely random. There was no pondering over the decision; no weighing in the pros and cons, no thinking it through or any real thought behind it. I literally woke up one morning and said to myself “I think I’ll go back to college” and I made the call. I called the College of New Rochelle and made the appointment for the admissions test. And before I knew what was actually happening, I was a matriculated college student.…

My decision to pursue a career in mechanical engineering came, not as an epiphany, but as an evolutionary process. I realized that engineering with a focus on efficient transportation was the heart of my home country’s economy, Thailand. Automobiles became a point of interest for me. I would spend almost every weekend at an automobile repair shop near my home. I would help the mechanics in doing their job, and as my skills developed, I came to understand the role of the engineer - to design intricate and reliable machinery.…

I was born in Germany with a German mother and an American father. The benefit of being born into a German family and living in Europe for the first ten years of my life was the greatest privilege I experienced throughout my sixteen years of living. However, my father was in the military at the time causing for a slight pressure to always be prevalent for the duration of my younger years. This mainly revolved around the fact that my sister was able to grow up in Germany and I wanted that same opportunity. Soon after these aspirations were formed, they became mere dreams that never would be fulfilled because my dad was given orders to either move to Mississippi or Oklahoma, which both deemed to be the middle-of-nowhere.…
