“College”, I can see that just mentioning the word ignites a fire in my parents’ eyes and I sense the excitement they feel as they drop question after question about it. Coming from a family that has never had a member attend a 4-year university has made it a huge priority in my life as a first generation student. The idea of being the first in a lineage to attend a higher form of education puts a lot on my shoulders as a senior in high school, but this pressure is actually my inspiration to achieve such a goal. I believe that being a Mexican American also has played a crucial role in my goal because my culture has raised me to be a passionate young man who pushes himself to achieve what I set out to do. As my fellow great Latino César Chávez…

I want to take this opportunity to sincerely and formally thank you for all you have done and made possible in helping me progress throughout my time here at SPC. My experience as a member of the Honors College has enhanced my life through the fellowship, better course environments, and the exceptional research conference opportunities and exposure that your leadership has provided. From a student’s standpoint ― especially an “unconventional” student such as myself ― you have given not only fresh and unique opportunities to myself and our membership, but you have given your heart and soul with the purpose of adding an advanced and totally positive learning environment. I know many Honors College alumni privately express this very same message to you ― but your total giving of time, energy, creativity, and true caring should receive far more formal acknowledgement.…

An individual’s characteristics are indicated by the differences between that individual and the people surrounding them. This world is competitive; we must compete for acceptance in society, as Thomas Malfus asserted in his 1798 essay, “The Principle of Population”. We must also compete for an education, and ultimately a career, which allows us to survive in our current society. Supplementing an individual’s past secondary education through the utilization of an Honors College, specifically through the University of Utah, allows for this edge in the individuals who take full advantages of their resources. The Honors College at the University of Utah offers a unique opportunity for those in attendance; the Praxis Lab.…

My parents, facing many difficulties, had to make a choice: stay in Iran and attempt to survive the war, or immigrate to the United States to create a better quality of life for themselves and their future children. They chose the latter and, with much toil, travelled to the United States and began a new life. Growing up, a huge motivator in my life was the constant reminder of the sacrifices my parents had made. I have always tried my hardest to live up to my parents’ expectations; it only seems right, seeing that they left their lives behind to give me opportunities that they didn’t have growing up. I’ve made it a priority to repay them by dedicating my utmost to all that I do, but somehow my utmost is never sufficient and I feel that I am…

WHY I WANT TO JOIN THE HONORS PROGRAM Alighting from a Boeing 747 jetliner on the JFK tarmac on Thursday evening, April 28, 2016, I walked into what could be called a new page in my life story—a new start. That was my first time on this side of the hemisphere. With little money, zero friends, one close relative and little to hold on to, I found myself leaning on only a thread of asset – my mind. I have been an “honors” student since the fifth grade. After graduating high school, I had no intention of purposefully participating in anymore advanced or gifted or honors classes, anything more rigorous than normal was ultimately not on my radar. After all, these are the type of classes I had known my entire school career. Nonetheless, I was slightly disappointed when I found out that students were invited to join the honors college on immediate acceptance to Georgia State and I had not been one of those lucky souls. But I figured it was for the best at the time.…
