WHY I WANT TO JOIN THE HONORS PROGRAM
Alighting from a Boeing 747 jetliner on the JFK tarmac on Thursday evening, April 28, 2016, I walked into what could be called a new page in my life story—a new start. That was my first time on this side of the hemisphere. With little money, zero friends, one close relative and little to hold on to, I found myself leaning on only a thread of asset – my mind. Knowing this, I vowed to keep this God given asset alive and growing with all my soul and might, and what better way to do this than to identify with people of like passion, people who will add to me. Like Prov. 27:17 said “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (NIV).
Every good student desires a high level of academic excellence that

One of the main reasons I want to join the Honors Program is the unique opportunity it offers for academic excellence. It literally places a demand on you to be excellent and gives you the help you need to keep up. Academic excellence as I know it is a key that helps one open doors in future careers. It is the first step towards getting the desired post-graduate spot or dream job. The very requirement for being considered for the program says it all –a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 out of the possible four points. In order to keep up with this level of academic excellence, a great deal of support is needed and the Honors Program offers it all; everything about the Honors Program encourages academic excellence – the mentorship, small class size, and other perks. In fact, it applies the right kind of pressure.
Being in good company is another draw for me in joining the Honors Program. The members are the best of the best. Such people inspire you to attain greater heights. No wonder Proverbs 27: 17 quipped “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (NIV). This sharpening is practically experienced among the members of the Honors Program. I strongly believe that one of the things necessary for success in any endeavor is to be among successful people; and in keeping with my goal of developing my mental capacity, I couldn’t think of a better company to belong to, than the members and faculty of the

I so much believe in the power of mentorship. It will be a difficult task, if not impossible to see a great man who has walked the sands of time and left a print without having a mentor. Of all mentorship quotes, I find this one by John C Maxwell most fascinating “One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination” (John C M). A good mentor sees the future you seek and helps you get there. That’s why I consider this opportunity to join the Honors Program essential for a safe landing into the career of my dreams. In joining the program, I hope to find a mentor who will help me fine tune my life dream. I consider the program to be a meadow grass where my dream would graze towards

I believe there is a more evident ambiance of respect in the Honors Program because, like the students, the professors are highly motivated. Additionally, the Honors students want to be in a more academically challenging environment and the professors want to teach these students who are hungry for knowledge. Furthermore, the smaller classroom settings are ideal for my learning process. With the smaller settings, there are less distractions and more individual attention which makes a difficult topic easier to comprehend. Also, I plan to take advantage of the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities since I have been accepted to the College of Engineering.…
