Thesis: Coming here as an international student, I faced a great challenge in language barrier, and illegal immigrants are experiencing the same difficulty; that is why, although the United States government’s policies toward immigration change over time, I support current actions to be easier on undocumented immigration.
Why I am here?
I decided to study in the U.S because of its superior education system, compared to Vietnam’s. The education system in Vietnam is very obsolete, and uninspiring. My English proficiency was good enough to get the admission to college, but it is not good enough for me to be comfortably communicate. Native people talk much faster in real life than in movies, or in English proficiency test that I sometimes cannot catch up. Moreover, different people have different accents, and they use a lot of slangs, idioms in daily situation that I do not understand. When I had just arrived here, my cousin was angry with me because she had to repeat things a lot of times before I could understand what she said. It was because she has different accent from what I learned, and my casual English was limited too. Not qualified for working legally, undocumented immigrants work in the shadow in which they receive low wage, under-table pay, and do not pay taxes. Not only the government lose their tax money, but the U.S’s residents also become disadvantaged in getting low-division jobs. Once the government grants immigrants authority to work legally, they can receive higher income, pay their taxes, and spend more money. As results, the government collects more tax money, American citizens and immigrants have equal chance to get jobs, and economy will have more money in its circulation. The White House has estimated the president 's programs on undocumented immigrants will contribute about $90 billion to $210 billion to domestic economic growth in 10-year period. (Soergel) Moreover, allowed undocumented immigrants to legally become a permanent resident can protect legal residents’ benefits. Illegal immigrants use fraudulent Social Security Number of American citizens to obtain jobs. Eight out of ten states which have the highest number of illegal aliens rank in top ten states having the highest incidence of identity theft. (Mortensen) Many children in the U.S having their identities stolen “work”, or “commit crimes” when they are in kindergarten. Many working people have to pay higher tax than they should do because someone else is using their identity to work.
