Rather than playing house with barbies or playing dress up, I had an affinity for building, fixing, and designing things. From constructing a swing in my backyard with only a few sturdy scarfs, a pillow, and a tree branch, to being in charge of the assembly of all furniture items my family purchased from Ikea, building, design, and creativity were significant parts of my childhood. Once I entered school, I realized that I was a skilled mathematician. I picked the subject up quite quickly and excelled, easily completing my work. By the time I was in the 8th grade, I was completing upper division high school math in my own time. Throughout my high school experience, math has been a breeze. Many people approached me about pursuing engineering, that it was an obvious path to follow once I got to college; however, I wasn’t sure if I actually enjoyed the field or if it was the pressure placed on me that made me like it. My high school had a very interesting program that allowed me to intern at a hospital. I had always wanted to help people and believed that entering the medical field would allow me to do so. I was convinced that becoming a surgeon was for me until I spent a month in the ER. It was very interesting to observe but it was nothing like I had seen on Grey’s Anatomy every Thursday night for the past two years. After reality hit me, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my
