The idea of the American dream originated from the hope and promise America offers. A man named James Truslow Adams coined the term in 1931 and defined it as "life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement"( ). The premise of the American dream is know matter where you started from every individual can achieve prosperity through hard work and determination. The American dream is kept alive because everyone can relate to it. Any person is able to have their own dream and accomplish it. People who come to America with nothing or those who grow up poor are able to reinvent their life. If you are born into a certain class you have the ability to change your social or socioeconomic status through public resources such as education. The dream gives people hope, it allows everyone to believe in themselves along with change who they are.

Being in an affluent society has shaped my dreams and expectations for myself. I am already in a good position to have a successful life, combining my situation now with hard work should allow me to achieve any of my goals. In my head when I think of the perfect American dream, my mind goes to a man with a good paying job, buying a house with his wife, and raising a family in their home with a white picket fence. This dream also includes a family who is close and does fun family activities. I do not live the American dream that I picture in my head; my parents are divorced and they both rent a house and an apartment. My siblings are much older than me and have not lived in the house for eleven plus years. I do not have the ideal family unit, but my life is good and I would not change it. The American dream does impact me in the sense of using hard work to achieve my goals and I am in a good place to live that
