I agree with you Allison, it is the responsibility of the source, who is sending the message to make sure that the receiver is getting the correct message. In the hospital, nurses are always teaching patient. It is the responsibility of the nurse to ask the patient to repeat back in order to find out if the teaching was effective. Nurse gives instruction about how to take medicine and use medical terminology which general public may not understand. Furthermore, word may have different meaning in another language. Perfect example of when instruction was given to a Hispanic patient to take pain medicine once a day, the patient took the medicine eleven times a day. The patient, who speak limited English may think he or she needs to take medicine eleven times a day because in Spanish once means eleven.
