Health is defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary as, “The overall state or condition of one’s body or mind” and, “The condition of being well or free from disease”. This definition begs the question: what does it take to achieve wellness? Author Greg Anderson once elaborated upon this definition by saying, “Wellness seeks more than the absence of illness; it searches for new levels of excellence. Beyond any disease-free neutral point, wellness dedicates its efforts to our total well-being - in body, mind, and spirit.” To get to a point of complete wellness, therefore, one must achieve a state of optimum physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, and environmental health, which I intend to do by making small changes to each dimension of my health. When the average person hears the word “health”, their mind fills with images of lifting weights, counting calories, and eating healthily. However, eating nutritious foods and exercising regularly only impacts the shape, size and composition of one’s body, when, in reality, there are many other facets of physical health. One’s susceptibility to sickness, ability to recover from injury, reflexes, and even ability to perform basic, everyday tasks are all parts of physical health. Personally, I try to maintain my physical health by eating well and having good hygiene, but I don’t have enough time to exercise regularly during the school year, at least not without managing my time a bit better.
