There are many pressures to be a woman. Society assumes them to be prim and proper. Their makeup should look simple and natural. They can 't dress provocative and be decorous. Society expects one figure of a lady that women should follow. Many advertisements provide this figure as thin and flawless. Women are expected to “sit still, look pretty” for the man’s world. However, H&M released a commercial for their Autumn 2016 collection that contradicts that belief with various types of fearless and self-reliant women. From the wardrobe to their strange acts, all the women in the ad destroys the concept of society’s lady. The commercial empowers women to be confident as they are. The advertisement sells confidence and independence for women of every type. The commercial organizes a series of scenes that airs disparate types of women in different situations. Released in 2016, the commercial exhibits different versions of the modern woman in American society (Hennesandmauritz). In a scene, a woman with a beautiful, blonde afro picks her teeth at the dinner table. Another scene shows a woman in the driver’s seat applying blue lipstick. The music of the ad connects with the visual part of the commercial. In the lyrics of the She’s a Lady by Lion Babe, it says “knowing she’s okay alone,” a young Indian woman freely dances and sings in a public scene …show more content…
In the past, women were expected to be polite, respectful, and proper to be a lady. The commercial shows its viewers that every female can be labeled as a lady in our modern society. H&M shows that women can be anything they want to be because society is changing the standards by demolishing that women have to be a specific type.
