Covergirl Rhetorical Analysis

In today’s society, beauty is defined by what we see from celebrities on social media and magazines. When one looks at thin, flawless models, it is hard to look in a mirror and call themself beautiful. “Easy, Breezy, beautiful, CoverGirl,” is a phrase that was found by CoverGirl and associated it with their brand. CoverGirl is a makeup brand that stresses every woman is beautiful and makeup is meant to enhance their natural beauty, not to cover it. A commercial I choose from CoverGirl shows that girls are able to do anything just as much as guys are able to. The commercial is named “GirlsCan: Women Empowerment” created by CoverGirl. By using the appeals of ethos, pathos, and logos, CoverGirl was able to show how great it is to be a girl, and sell their products. The commercial shows a strong message on how girls are able to do as much things as a guy, it helps girls gain confidence. The ad starts by playing dramatic music with Ellen Degeneres saying “Girls Can’t”, followed by other famous stars stating what a girl can’t do such as playing hockey, rapping, and being funny. They start to speed up the commercial, mixing the voices of all the stars saying “Girls can’t” until they show Queen Latifah again saying “yeah girls can”. They later go on to show each star …show more content…
The outlook that CoverGirl is trying to display is that women can do everything a man is able to do. Many people that believe the concept that a woman is not able to do what a man is, do not understand how it is negative and hurtful, also lowering one’s self-esteem, until they think about it at a deeper level. Throughout the commercial, celebrities like Ellen and Queen Latifah explain how they own businesses, rap, and dance crazy. Ellen and Queen Latifah reflect logically on this concept, making us also think about the message. Nobody wants to be told they can not do something because of their gender, therefore these celebrities make their voice

In an essay titled “Sage Femme” the author Samantha Tengelitsch uses many rhetorical strategies such as repetition, contrast, imagery, narrative and certain appeals to develop her argument. Tengelitsch use repetition by writing “my children slept soundly, the dog took little notice” several times throughout her essay which helps emphasize the ease of home birth. The description of the room she gave birth in creates imagery and establishes a peaceful visualization for her audience and illustrates her perspective. The author also uses contrast by displaying the negative aspects of giving birth in a hospital compared to giving birth at home.…

An association of forty women stand in front of the Congress of the United States of America in Washington, D.C. in order to lobby an issue that directly affects each of them in many different aspects of their lives on a daily basis. The lobbyists appearances vary in terms of ethnicities, age, and visible socioeconomic statuses, creating a contrast to the predominantly Caucasian group of middle-aged male political figures, who are anxiously engaged in what the next speaker is preparing to express. Barbie Izquierdo, a working mother of two, steps up to the microphone, which has previously been used by an immeasurable amount of notable political activists, and blatantly proclaims to Congress; “Just because we live where we live, and come from…

Hi Rachel, I know what you are talking about. When my son was growing up, I remember his excitement when he saw advertisement on TV and he would ask me to buy him something he just saw. There was a commercial about a man chewing two pieces of gum, and after that he always wanted two pieces rather that one. Likewise, often I get ideas of what to buy for my family after I see advertisement online or on TV. I think its super helpful especially when you don’t have a lot of time to shop.…

Amy Cuddy interpretation of the nonverbal, physical ways that people compose themselves was informative and interesting. I agree that when people mentally and physically open themselves up to others, it is a clear reflection of their confidence. I liked that she compared humans to the animals in the wild, providing an example of birds opening their wings compared to celebrities reaching out with their arms. As an observer to see a leader hunched over is far less reassuring than one that is standing tall and embracing the crowd.…

In the four pages that I have read of the short story titled “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, the author uses language in many ways to convey the message that you can be anything you want to be if you set your mind to it. Amy Tan uses connotation and tone immensely throughout her writing to show the reader the emotional struggle that the narrator is going through. One section of the short story states, “I began to cry. Such a sad, ugly girl! I made high - pitched noises like a crazed animal, trying to scratch out the face in the mirror.”…

In Maria W. Stewart's lecture in Boston in 1832, she conveys her position on the injustices of slavery and the cruelty that slaves experiences through the use of diction, figurative language, and her own personal experience. Altogether, these create a sense of injustice and desparity for the cause of the African Americans and their freedoms and aspirations to be something more than just servile labor. Diction is a major influence in this lecture. With a variety of words, such as "chains", "ragged", "drudgery and toil", "exhausted", "death", and "cruel", Stewart appeals to the feelings of people in an attempt to make them understand the hardships and extreme injustice that encompass the life of a slave. To continue, there is also another set…

After viewing the documentary of “Miss Representation” I found that the message this documentary was sending its viewers was that the media sells the idea that women are visualized and praised for their beauty, sexuality and youth rather than their intellectualism and leadership skills. “Miss Representation” exposes the ugly truth behind the media and politics towards women. I found this documentary to be persuasive and successful in bringing awareness to both men and women, of what the “normal “everyday women goes through and the pressure they attain because of the media by the following supported claims. Faults in the advertisement come in to play, as it insists that natural beauty is in fact not natural beauty at all, but foundation on the skin made to look flawless. In addition, the ad suggests that the reasons behind wearing makeup are to gain the opposite genders attention and to appeal to their liking. The ad raises the question: Why can’t women wear make up to feel good about themselves? And why isn’t natural beauty not defined as the natural skin women are given? After all shouldn 't a magazine, solely for women, praise them for who they are verses their appearance?…
