It is everywhere, an always present force that comes from every direction. It often appears fast, catching one’s attention, then vanishing just as quick; many think they are left unscaved, yet they fail to realize its true effect works like a shadow, following a person, slowly creeping into his or her thoughts, working its mind control. It is neither flying fowl or airborne aircraft, but rather something much more mundane and overlooked. It is advertising. Some may see this as being a malevolent force, having powers too great, powers that could corrupt the minds of the unsuspecting masses. However, advertisment actually presents many benefits to society, whether it be the sharing of information or promoting certain philosophies or lifestyles; advertisement is simply a valuable, sweeping tool that some misuse. Marketers, those who are in charge of a company’s advertisement, have to appeal to the largest group of people that they can for it to be truly successful (Source F). To do this, they attempt to create a commonplace among viewers such as Dove’s, “Camera Shy” campaign which focused on insecurity. Though this commercial focused primarily on women, it focused on women of different ages and ethnicities and only focused on women to lift this group up and fight society's pressure on women to be conscious about their body. Positive messages like this can have a long lasting impact on many, especially young adults. In “Advertising: Information or Manipulation?” Nancy Day informs the reader, “Teens establish buying habits they will carry into adulthood” (Source D). If adults continuously buy into the product a company advertises, then who’s to say they won’t continuously buy into the ideals that a company advertises.
