Because of the lack of stringent gun control laws in the United States, there have been incidents that are more violent and deadly. In today’s society we have been witness more than a plethora of school shootings, deaths by misuse, the selling and trading of firearms to the very mentally ill, and other small incidents that go uncounted for. When dealing with gun control it is best to understand what it means to those unaware to it. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary and a search on Wikipedia, gun control is the “laws and policies that regulates the selling, manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or the use of firearms.” These are practically important because they keep the most dangerous of weapons such as high-powered assault rifles, pistols, revolvers, shot guns, and other hazardous weapons out of the reach of minors, those unstable to handle them, and the criminals that bring them illegally in the country. But the government has not done a proficient job at protecting us from lunatics like Dylan Roof, Adams Lanza, and James Holmes – all mass shooters – from acquiring weapons as these. But in order to actually help the mentally ill, it is best not to stigmatize or stereotype these people. It can only make life more complicated and complex than it already is. Tania Lombrozo on npr.org writes that, and I quote, “mental health professionals worry about the impact of emphasizing mental illness as a causal factor in mass shootings, which could — to quote an article by David Crary — lead to “setbacks to their efforts to de-stigmatize mental illness.”” This means that if we only make the same accusations that these individuals are crime bent then were only perpetuate the stereotype until something does happen; which will happen over and over again. It is better to let them have their dignity as they are entitled it, it cannot be taken away because of another person’s bad
