Urine scalding occurs when patients who are recumbent or suffer from incontinence, are left to lie in their own urine or faeces. When this happens the development of decubital ulcers appears or in the case of urine a scald (dermatitis) appears. Nurses can help prevent it by providing clean bedding daily or bedding that wicks away moisture, by providing plenty of opportunities to urinate and defecate outdoors, keeping the patient clean and free of urine or faeces on the coat/hair, the coat/hair must also be kept dry at all times. Some patients may need to have a bath regularly on certain areas to ensure it stays thoroughly clean. In other cases it is best to shave or trim the hair down so that it makes it easier to check the skin regularly.
