Abstract
Pressure ulcers present great challenges for all who are involved. Treating pressure ulcers can take a lot of time, focus and proper training. Patients, caregivers and physicians have to work as a team to prevent and treat these unfortunate painful sores. One major concern is patients with spinal cord injuries and how to administer treatment and the avoidance or pressure ulcers. Through time they developed how it was formed and the severity they can get to. In the 1940s discoveries were made on the destruction of tissue, from the force being at the foundation of the wound over bony areas of the body. Numerous researchers aided in the discoveries and were among the first to understand that muscle was more at risk to pressure than skin. Several studies have been conducted on a mixture of facts involving pressure ulcers. These studies have focused on the stages, description of tissue damage and the standards for treatment of pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers were grouped by the severity. The severity can range from discoloration and increase blood to the surface of the skin, advancing to open deep tissue damage or proceed to full tissue loss. The significance of staging allows care professionals the knowledge of proper care and treatment. Arrangement of care starting with a proper head to toe assessment of the skin and pressure point is the first line of defense. A daily assessment allows keeping up with proper care and provides time for inspection of the boney areas of the body. When a patient is bedbound, it is important to assess the skin and reposition the patient at a minimum of every two hours. If proper care is given to a patient whom is immobile, then future concerns can be avoided. When health professionals come to an understanding of the type of treatment needed, the importance and the responsibilities of properly identifying a pressure ulcer; this is when true result will surface.
Conclusion
Practicing proper plan of care and treatment insures positive results with pressure ulcers. Prevention starts with in dept skin assessments, repositioning the patient, assessing for incontinence, and encouraging fluids. The high risk patients include elderly, neurologically impaired, chronically hospitalized and spinal cord injuries. They are also the individuals that face the painful concerns of medical treatment and expenses. A simple factor of considerable care is the true baseline of security.
