Nurse Wound Care Specialist Preventing Pressure Ulcers Pressure ulcers is an issue that nurses have been trying to solve for years, yet it is still a current issue in long term hospital stays and long term care facilities. Pressure ulcers could better be prevented if facilities had a wound care team to provide skin assessment and management of pressure ulcers. The need in facilities is to have nurses that are responsible for preventing pressure ulcers. Pressure ulcers occur on boney prominences like the sacrum, heels, or scapula’s. They are usually a result of the patient’s inability to move themselves causing them to lay in the same position leading to their skin breaking down to a painful sore (Moore Webster, & Samuriwo, pg. 2). Nursing care influences everything in a facility. Nurses are the people that see their patient’s multiple times a day and build the therapeutic relationship to help in the healing process. Everyone interprets things differently, and this causes a barrier that long term care nurses have to overcome. “As the field of wound care advances and seeks validity as a distinctive healthcare specialty, it becomes imperative to define practice competencies for all related professionals in the arena” (Corbett, pg. 2). When nurses are assessing for or treating pressure ulcers, they need to have the basis of information to be able to provide the best patient care. A wound care team would do just that in these scenarios. A wound care team has the same foundation of knowledge on assessing and treating pressure ulcers.
