According to the Electronic Self-Assessment of Leadership Behavior (e-SALB) results, my current style of leadership is Management by Exception – Passive, with Laissez Faire a very close second. Using the material from Course 15, Management by Exception – Passive is where a leader waits to intervene only after something goes wrong, and/or standards are not met. This is only a step above a Laissez-Faire style of leadership, where there is virtually no guidance at all because, the leader is lazy or does not feel subordinates are their responsibility. My current style of leadership needs to change, especially if I want to further develop not only myself, but more importantly, my subordinates and my peers.

Feedback is the avenue through which I can better, assess emotional health, adapt using emotional flexibility, cooperate during negotiations, and avoid the fear of conflict. By asking questions, fielding concerns, enforcing discipline and providing positive reinforcement, I can control the effectiveness of my subordinates, peers and supervisor. By effectively using feedback, I will be able to further develop my subordinates by using individual consideration to show genuine interest and care in their professional growth. From my peers’ perspectives, I will be able to set the example through idealized influence and reinforce their confidence in my abilities to lead. I will promote the importance of individual contribution through actively seeking different ideas, perspectives and even opposing views, in an effort to stimulate creativity and innovation. I will maintain an environment that promotes respect through trust and honesty, to fully encourage open communication, while enforcing discipline to suppress fear of ridicule. I will not be afraid to lead by example in an effort to promote intellectual stimulation and idealized influence. From my subordinates’ perspectives, I will be able to show them how to influence others to be more productive.
