Supervision Today states that, “empowerment means increasing your employees’ involvement in their work through greater participation in the decisions that control their work” (Robbins 105). As a special events intern I wanted to participate in everything that involved with event planning. Often times supervisors make all the decisions and the employees just listen. Yet, the Special Events Manager let me make decisions. She allowed me to pick caterers and décor for certain events. She could have just said, “this is the caterer, email him the forms and go over the menu.” Instead, she listened to my ideas and said, “Give the restaurant a call, get a quote, pick the menu items.” She allowed me to participate in conference meetings, board meetings, and brought me along to venues. My internship could have been just scanning papers, and getting supplies, but she empowered me. My responsibilities expanded quickly. My great supervisor was effective because she planned events appropriately. She had a monthly, weekly, and daily agenda. Once a month we briefly looked over all the events for the month, on Mondays we would go over the assignments that needed to be done by the end of the week, and every morning we discussed our objectives for the day. My supervisor’s short term planning worked well. We got things done on time and with great quality. This type of planning made me an effective employee because of her impeccable organizational skills. I think it would have been stressful and chaotic if she didn’t display or discuss the plans for the month, week and day. If she had ideas for the future, then we wouldn’t have had our full attention to the current events. In addition, if she didn’t discuss our tasks for the week or even the day, events would have been unorganized and
