Laura the HS professional’s actions with this family would build a relationship with them that they have not had much success before with other counselors. She should first self-examine herself for any biases that might prevent her from helping this family. Laura could help the Soto/Torres family overcome barriers through the empowerment- focused approach. This would help the family through the areas that they are unsure how to proceed. She would encourage them to seek help through applications and services or programs without the fear of being rejected or shunted.

She would be able to address inequality and social justice issues that families face directly through contacts with social/ political sectors. Laura also involves other individual professionals such as education counselors, judicial counselors to advocate for change. The families still have Laura, but also they now have access to other professionals that have direct connections to resources, services and programs.
Empowerment means to be able to have someone who works on behalf or with you that has your best interest and wants you to be successful. They give encouragement and focus on the positive about you. As a HS professional I would know that a family is empowered when they make moves to help themselves that results in positive changes. When they need less of me as a HS professional and rely on finding solutions on their own to eliminate their barriers and feel good doing
