In the late 1960s these things began to change. Many corporations did not know whether to keep the majority happy by keeping things as they were or take a stand against racism. Xerox took a stand when Xerox’s first chairman, Joseph C. Wilson took a step against racism, after he purposefully hired more minority employees in response to the race riots in the 1960s (Schermerhorn, J., et al 2012). This behavior continued on through the 1970s, when Xerox welcomed individuals that were different than the majority. In fact, it was at this time that Xerox’s commitment to social diversity continued on when they established an “internal affirmative action office” (Schermerhorn, J., et al 2012). They have been rated as being within the Top 10 companies that hire minorities by Forbes, Fortune, Working Mother, and Latino Style just to name a few (Schermerhorn, J., et al 2012). Sexual orientation was included in the teachings at Xerox in the 1990s. They established GALAXe Pride at Work, a “caucus group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender employees” (Scherhorn, J., et al 2012). Xerox was among the first major corporations to offer domestic benefits for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees. Xerox made it to third base with this one. Xerox has continued to be on the forefront of their commitment to their employees’ diversity, no matter their race, color, creed or sexual preference.
