Background
The chosen topic for this thesis is the diffusion of new technology of social media amongst students of Hawaii Pacific University. Communication between people has advanced, from writing letters, to sending emails, and now through different social media platforms. According to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, the number of students using the Internet grows annually each year (as cited Metzger, Flanagin & Zwarun, 2003). Therefore, in this study, social media is a term that refers to Internet-based sites and services that promote social interaction between participants. A few examples of these Internet-based sites and services are discussion forums, blogs, wikis, podcasting, and social networking sites.

People are posting “selfies” and post them on Facebook, while there are others that post their food on Facebook or other social media networking sites. People pay attention to the small details of other people’s lives, the pleasure over their own family photos and sharing the level of family pictures with other people online. People are connecting and being exposed to both comfort and diverse perspectives. It has also become easier to support each other and the things we like. A great example was when same-sex marriage was finally legalized in all of the 50 states in the United States, Facebook created a rainbow filter tool which users could cover their profile pictures to show their support and celebrate the historic ruling (Kelly, …show more content…
This theory is most appropriate to this thesis, which will show how different college people are adopting the types of new social media technology. The decision making process of innovation is a process which an innovation is communicated through certain channels over time among the members of a social system. Diffusion is a special type of communication in which the messages are about a new idea (Rogers, 1995).
The innovation decision process is the process where an individual passes from first knowledge of an innovation, to forming an attitude toward the innovation, to a decision to adopt or to reject, to implementation of the new idea or to confirmation of this decision (Roger, 1995). This individual is categories in one of the five categories of adopters: innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards (Littlejohn & Foss, 2011). Applying this theory to a thesis that discusses how HPU college students adopt new technology, will also explain how and why this occurs.
