According to the article, Differentiated Instruction and Implications for UDL Implementation, one of the leading theorists, Carol Ann Tomlinson, defined differentiated instruction as “...a teaching theory based on the premise that the instructional approaches should vary and be adapted in relation to individual and diverse students in the classroom” (Hall, Meyer, Strangman, 2003, p. 2). Additionally, the authors noted, “The model of differentiated instruction requires teachers to be flexible in their approach to teaching and adjust the curriculum and presentation of information to learners rather than expecting students to modify themselves for the curriculum” (Hall, Meyer, Strangman, 2003, p. 2). One way to facilitate differentiation is through the use of technology. When utilizing technology within the classroom there are several benefits and potential challenges associated with differentiating classroom instruction at the elementary level. One benefit is that technology provides multiple and flexible methods of presenting and assessing information. In addition, technology assists in scaffolding student learning by utilizing various programs and software to grab students’ attention. Although there are several benefits, classroom instructors may face challenges as well. One challenge is the amount of technological options/devices available. Should there only be a few options available, it is vital to create a classroom community in which sharing is modeled and practiced.
