Regards to healthcare would have to be my Stepmother Dr. Christine Mckimmie. We all view leaders we would want to be like for different reasons. There is not one person I feel I could idolize in every way, but idolize my stepmother for her ability to apply her self in educational situations. I came from a family where no one had went to college so her presence and insight was quite different aspect for me to have around since we were considered a blue collar family. When asked how she became a leader this was something that developed over time. She explains in terms of application to the healthcare that “It was not done over time especially in the medical field there is always someone else you are learning from.” From this question we gathered that leadership is a life learning process, which requires experience, education, and time to achieve. We had also spoken about how leadership can be interpreted or changed based off the role within an organization. Dr. Mckimmie had started working for Pearle Vision in 2000 and at that time my Grandparents were the owners of this franchise and several others. In the year 2012 she had purchased this franchise located in California, Maryland. With this came other leadership roles and responsibilities. She was no longer the Doctor that could come in to see her patients, and leave at the end of the day. She was now responsible for overseeing all employees, payroll, taxes, and maintenance needed for the building and several other tasks, which were previously out of her scope. When talking about what she felt was the most important skill to have in leadership was experience. She states “No one will want to follow your directions as a leader if you do not know every aspect of the job” which I found to be quite true. In the military we have a ranking structure, and some can make their way through the ranks faster than others. With higher rank does not always account for more experience. As a Third Class Petty Officer (E-4) I was actually in charge of Second Class Petty Officers (E-5) because I had more experience, and skills to ensure the organization was meeting its goal. There are varieties of leadership styles that we see with different bosses. …show more content…
Dr.Mckimmie had said “There were many different styles of leadership I have seen, but all great leadership styles stem from the basis of the respect from employee to the supervisor and vice versa.” I had a agreed with this as well reflecting on my leaders that they had all had in-depth experience and knowledge; as well as shown a mutual respect and understanding to my needs as I had for theirs. With that relationship in place it made it quite easy to get work done since we were both working towards the same goals with a mutual understanding. Dr. Mckimmie has established the leader she follows as her mother. Her mother was a member of the Calvert County Public School system in southern Maryland for 30 years starting as a teacher, and retiring as the principle of the technical training center in 2008. She states “ I admired her persistence for excellence making changes to make the education system better, and I strive to make my healthcare the best
