This paper will evaluation my experience, public health leadership and management self-assessment, as well as Humanmetrics to fully understand what is required in order to be an effective leader and manager. One of the first assignments in the Field Based Experience course, a Public Health self-assessment was assigned in order to identify our strengths and weaknesses in the following categories: Visionary Leadership & Systems Thinking, Basic Public Health Sciences, Management – Program, Financial, Personnel, Risk, and Politics and Public Health Law, and Community. My results have shown that I need to focus my energy and time into becoming more competent in all fields. I was strongest in visionary leadership and systems thinking, but I had a lot of improvement to do in the rest of the categories. In the course of the few weeks of my internship, I saw what are the characteristics for a good leader and manager were. I was categorized as Extraverted Sensing Feeling Judging or ESFJ, who are known as caregivers. ESFJ “are warm, sympathetic, helpful, cooperative, tactful, down to earth, practical, thorough, consistent, organized, enthusiastic, and energetic” (retrieved from personalitypages.com). ESFJ’s have a broad career choice, which include nurse, teacher, administrator, child care, physician, clergy, office manager, counselor, social worker, bookkeeper, accountant, administrative assistant. From the list, it shows that I can be a great office manager, and during my fieldwork I have noticed this quality in me. I have pay close attention to the details and try to recall what is needed to be done in certain situation, also I have great organizing skills for putting things in order, and implementing data into the computer. Also, I learned that the career choice of Physician Assistant is a great choice for ESFJ. I think I would be an excellent accountant if I were to choose this path. ESFJ’s are organized, loyal and structured. I definitely enjoy creating schedules that is the key to effective time management in ensuring that all work is done and one time.
