Ms. Costa has used her leadership skills while working in her department under unusual circumstances of being short staffed. First of all this situation has placed Ms. Costa in a position of coordinating the clinic while addressing appropriate scheduling of patients , being a resource to other staff in the department ( providers, fellows , MSA ) as well as to other medical staff in the hospital beyond her specialty. Secondly she has been a major support and resource to newly hired NP who never worked in VA system. Thirdly Ms. Costa has been leading CGM clinic independently which requires organization skills and ability to perform procedure. - creating a result letter template for department to improve patient and provider communication regarding lab results as per policy in the VA hospital. This has also improved time management in the clinic.
- assuming insulin pump downloads scanning process which she initiated and established with the cooperation of Rene Burns chief of HIMS. This change provides information accessible to all anyone involved in patient care as well as reinforces proper documentation.
- promoting proper and effective patient scheduling by Endocrinology MSA which eliminated discrepancies with scheduling , helped properly to utilize appointment time, decreased no- show rate by 50% , avoided veterans being lost of follow up so critical in diabetes management.
- following consults for Endocrinology in order to respond to the need of other departments in timely manner which avoided delay of patient care and treatment.
