Everyone has heard the phrase “Respect your elders” while growing up. The phrase suggests that it is imperative to show respect for your elders simply because they are older or have a position of authority. Respect is something that many people desire, but not everyone is willing to give. According to Merriam-Webster, respect is a feeling or understanding that someone or something is important and should be treated in an appropriate way. Although society looks at respect as being given, it has to be earned. We all want respect, therefore we should give respect. Unfortunately, this does not always happen. There are two types of respect, self-respect and respect for others. Self-respect is an individual’s attitude towards themselves. Self-respect can be described as the way you carry yourself through characteristics such as friends, clothing, and personal hygiene. You can show self-respect simply by waking up to brush your teeth every morning or taking a bath. It is said that before one can learn to respect others they must learn to respect themselves first. Showing respect for others is not always an easy job, but when you do it makes the world a much better place. Having respect for others can be as simple as making eye contact when you are having a conversation. When your eyes wander while someone is talking to you it gives off the impression that you aren’t interested in what they are talking about, this is considered rude or disrespectful. When you have respect for others you are very mindful of things such as another person’s beliefs. Around the world people have many different cultures, religions and teachings. For example, in the United States people use hugging as a way of greeting one another, however in the Middle East this technique is not acceptable. 21-year old Al-Khayyal was arrested in Saudi Arabia’s capital for offering “free hugs”.
