Define Self-Efficacy
How one feels about their own capabilities plays a major role in how they see themselves and evaluate their self worth. This determination effects how people “think, behave, and feel” (Davidson, 2003). Virtually all people like to be successful, have the power to overcome short comings and set future goals. This theory attempts to explain the interactions between cognitive, behavioral and environmental influences (triadic reciprocal causation). According the Bandura human behavior is defined” as cognitive, vicarious, self regulatory and reflective” (Davidson, 2003). Many visible human behaviors have been learned from observing others who became models to imitate. Four models of observational learning are known. They are “attention (observe the model), symbolic representation (the use of symbols to solve problems), transformation to action (convert conception into actions) and motivational incentive” (become motivated to put into practice what was observed). Bandura pays a great deal of attention to self efficacy. Self efficacy is the confidence one has to succeed which consequently leads to achievement and persistent. The four ways of developing a strong sense of self efficacy are recognized as mastery (successfully mastered a test), social modeling (believe what others can do, so can I), social persuasion (talked into by others to believe one’s own ability), physical/emotional (read one’s own ability right). Therefore building up students self efficacy is curial to me. This can be achieved through several tested strategies. First, my classroom will be welcoming. Students can feel confident to ask questions and will get answers. My goal is to teach all students in my classroom regardless of their learning levels. I will make my instructions clear so students know exactly what to do, but also allow for students participation in decision making. I help students design specific learning strategies wherein students advance through levels and see their progress. Short term goals are also a motivating incentive. Students will be encouraged to work on projects that arouse their curiosity and satisfy interests. They will sometimes work with peers or in groups or self teach. I will praise when earned as well as encourage better performance. I influence students to work harder problems out loud, use open ended questions and prompts to promote thinking.
