Figure 1.1 shows a sender encoding a message and sending it through a communication channel to a receiver who then decodes the message and interprets the message, after this, feedback is sent back to the sender as a response. However, there are many barriers to effective communication (noise) such as absence of feedback, cultural differences (languages etc.) and others. Criterion was quite effective in their communication methods by making ‘repeated trips to US subsidiaries’ (Campbell-Hunt, 2000). In this context, Brian Smaill was the sender who made direct contact (face-face) with the key movers of the product within the US industry, who are the receivers/customers of their product. Face-face communication is the most effective communication method as it minimises ‘noise’ the most. It allows the sender to read the body language of the receiver directly after communicating their ideas making it easier to understand how the message has been perceived. 1. A country club manager mainly focuses is on people’s needs and building relationships.
2. Impoverished manager mainly focuses on minimum work to get work done.
3. Authoritative manager mainly focuses on efficiency of tasks.
4. Team manager mainly focuses on building commitments to shared purpose.
Criterion’s Brian Smaill is a team leader and has shown quality leadership skills. His employees have access to a swimming pool and a squash court showing that he wants his employees to feel relaxed but at the same time he cares for the productivity of the company and send them to training and night classes. This working environment allows the staff to be under a relaxed but controlled environment which elevates productivity.
